Walter Elias Disney was an American entrepreneur, animator, voice actor and film producer. A pioneer of the American animation industry, he introduced several developments in the production of cartoons. As a film producer, Disney holds the record for most Academy Awards earned by an individual, having won 22 Oscars from 59 nominations. He was presented with two Golden Globe Special Achievement Awards and an Emmy Award, among other honors. Several of his films are included in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

• Walt Disney was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1901. Disney had three brothers (Herbert, Raymond, Roy) and one sister (Ruth), and he helped with the family farm. Disney developed an early interest in drawing. He enrolled in Kansas City Art Institute for Saturday morning classes at the age of 14. In high school he did drawings for the school paper and received art instruction from newspaper cartoonist Jerry Gossett. • During World War I, Walt was too young to enlist so he forged his birthdate on an application to drive the Red Cross Ambulance in France. • After the war, he returned to the U. S. in 1919 and began working • He took art classes as a boy and got a job as a commercial illustrator at the age of 18.

• One of his first jobs as an artist was to draw the slides used as advertisements in motion picture theatres between changes of films. He called these slides laugho-grams and often used humorous animals to carry out his ideas. He invented a character based on a tame mouse who had become friendly enough to walk across his drawing board. Years later, he made this mouse his first animated cartoon subject. Mickey Mouse was born. • He moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1923 and set up the Disney Brothers Studio with his brother Roy.
