DISCUSSION ON STRATEGY ACPWP‘s Scope of Work z 1. The Committee advises the Director-General on FAO’s programme in the field of sustainable production and consumption of forest industry products. 2. The Committee examines key issues across the forest products value chain related to the economic, environmental, social and culture-dependent aspects of private sector forest ownership, sustainable forest management, harvesting, processing, investments, trade, consumption, and associated benefits of carbon and other environmental services. 3. The Committee seeks to maximize the multiple forest sector benefits from innovations and more efficient small, medium and large-scale processing of mechanical, chemical and energy products of roundwood, logging residues, recycled forest products and industry waste. 4. The Committee works to improve communication, knowledge and information exchange and training on best practices between the members, the private sector experts and FAO Forestry

DISCUSSION ON STRATEGY ACPWP‘s role in implementation z Committee assumes a more active role in : 1. Advising FAO in concepts, projects, policy work and fundraising in the relevant forest sector work through Trust Funds and/or the Private Sector Partnership Committee. 2. Advising on how to serve requests of countries to solve their specific problems in forestry, products and forest industries. 3. Suggesting FAO to undertake new work, and reviewing studies and statistical data compiled by FAO on forests, products and forest industries. 4. Suggesting and jointly organizing with FAO international meetings (such as the Forests: the Heart of a Green Economy side event in Rio+20 , 18 th June, 2012). FAO can call up the Committee for advise on subjects requiring the expertise of ACPWP Working Group(s). FAO Forestry

Validating and advocating the benefits of forest product value chains in climate change mitigation and low-carbon bio-economy. Supporting the transformation of collaborative business models and partnerships along forest product value chains and innovation for sustainable consumption and living. Continuous improvement of communication and participation in stakeholder dialogues in international fora on issues of mutual interest. FAO forest resources assessments, regional / thematic outlook studies, fiber supply studies. These will be integrated into Forestry Department’s Programme of Work and Budget (PWB) for 2012 -2013 FAO Forestry

DISCUSSION ON STRATEGY New Name and Internal Governance New name: Advisory Committee on Sustainable z Forest-based Industries (ACSFI) Governance structure: 1. The Chair and the Vice-Chair are selected among the ACPWP private sector members, and they lead the work in close collaboration with the ACPWP Secretary from FAO. 2. A 4 -6 person Steering Committee (SC) is established to: - meet regularly in person and in a virtual working space for reviewing work and meeting agendas, - support the ACPWP Chair and provide guidance for the Secretary, - organize inter-sessional meetings, - give inputs to FAO priority setting and PWB processes. 3. 2 -3 Thematic Working Groups are established among the ACPWP member association experts and FAO, to address the key Working Agenda subjects. 4. More significant Steering Committee and ACPWP inputs would be solicited every 2 years to influence COFO, PWB, resource allocation and Medium Term Plan in FAO. 5. Secretariat ensures that geographic representativeness be taken up appropriately. FAO Forestry

As a basic principle they ought to represent a broader constituency than just their own organization. On ad hoc basis on thematic issues. Could include e. g. Advisers participate in the discussions, and advise the member and the Chairman. ACPWP RESTRUCTURING PROCESS Steps and Timelines z 1. ACPWP-53 rd, 23 -24 May 2012: discuss and reach a compromise on the renewal process as comes to membership and strategy of the Committee. 2. FAO Committee on Constitutional and Legal Matters (CCLM), 11 -12 Sept 2012: submit (June 2012) new Committee name, membership, statutes, and TORs into CCLM documentation, agenda and approval. 3. COFO, 24 -28 September 2012: submit (June 2012) new Committee name, membership, statutes, and scope of work into COFO documentation, agenda and approval. Present a powerful message on where the Committee’s key added value to FAO is and how this can be reflected in FAO Programme of Work and Budget. 4. FAO Council meeting (Nov. 2012): approves the changes proposed to the Committee through the discussion on CCLM, COFO reports, and these will be enacted for 2013 -2014. FAO Forestry
