Narratives Elements in Essays p. 367 -369 • Narration is one of the most common types of writing because it does two things. – It tells an interesting, intriguing story – It makes a point or discusses the significance of the story to the author or the audience. • A narrative essay is usually told chronologically which means that events are in time sequence order • Narrative essays use a variety of methods to get the readers to feel like they are THERE, experiencing the events of the story.

Practice Identifying Narratives • Look at “Paragraph 1” on p. 368. Now, read “Paragraph 2” right below it. • Why is Paragraph 2 a narrative when Paragraph 1 is not? • Read Together: “Scars” on p. 118 • How is “Scars” a narrative? Does it have a beginning, a middle, and an end? Does it make a point or discuss the significance of the events to the author/audience? • How do you think an author of a narrative should decide when to stop? • What was the point of the essay? Why did she tell this story? To put it another way, what was the author’s purpose? • The essay that we read is very open ended. Do you think

Read and Discuss: “The Secret Latina” • What is the point of this narrative? Why did the author write it? • What are some of the details that help you to understand the text? • The author does a good job of focusing on the most important/interesting parts of the story. Find a place where she has a lot of detail and tell me why you think she decided to focus there.

Review Essay 1 Prompt Passed Out Last Week • Let’s read the full prompt together carefully. • Highlight things you need to remember, and take notes of any ideas you have. • This essay is a example/illustration essay that may use narrative elements. • This means it will use both narrative and examples to illustrate the significance of what we are writing about.

Homework Due Tomorrow (Tuesday) • In Class: Discuss Generating Ideas and Creating Outlines. • Due: • Pathways “Scar” p. 118 and “Light Skin vs Dark Skin” p. 536 • NOTE: If you haven’t already read the two short essays due today (“Saying Adios to Spanglish” and “English: Friend or Foe? ”) please do so because we will discuss them tomorrow. • Work on your ideas for a topic for Essay 1, and bring your notes/ideas to class. • Also bring your prompt/outline because we will talk about creating outlines in class.
