Direct discrimination • When someone is treated unfairly because of a special characteristic E. g. People discuss work things at the pub after work but the man doesn’t drink A woman doesn’t get the job because she might get pregnant
Indirect discrimination When a rule or policy that applies to everyone puts a person or group at a disadvantage Management meetings
Discrimination by Association Direct discrimination aimed at a person because they are from a certain group e. g. someone is gay or is a muslim, or isn’t from the same church
Harassment Unwanted conduct (action) which has the effect of hurting their dignity or hurting them in some way e. g. sexual harrassment
Victimization Someone is treated badly because they complained about something e. g. someone who complained about people about sex topics at work or someone swears
Discrimination by Perception • Indirect discrimination by someone because people believe they have a protected characteristic even if they don’t • People thinking you might be gay, or depressed etc.
