Goals and target audience Francesca Scianitti – EPPCN Meeting – Rome, May 9 th 2016
Goals and target audience During the week of study on the international project for a big future accelerator of particles (FCC Week 2016), INFN and CERN organize a public event on the infrastructures for basic research. Among the protagonists, the Italian physicists engaged in the research at CERN, the story of the recent findings and future challenges of particle physics, the different points of view on the impact of technology and infrastructure for the research on the economy and on society. The videos and images that will accompany the story, along with the music of Umberto Petrin and Stefano Benni’s voice, will lead the audience to discover some of the mysteries about the structure and evolution of the Universe and of the ideas that are at the frontier of our knowledge. Francesca Scianitti – EPPCN Meeting – Rome, May 9 th 2016
On Stage… Act n. 1 LHC and beyond: from the Higgs Boson to New Physics FABIOLA GIANOTTI, Director General of CERN FERNANDO FERRONI, president of INFN Act n. 2 New machines for new physics MICHELANGELO MANGANO, theoretical physicist at CERN GUIDO TONELLI, INFN - CMS experiment (CERN) Act n. 3 Economic social impact of research infrastructures SERGIO BERTOLUCCI, INFN - former director of research at CERN MASSIMO FLORIO, economist, Università degli Studi di Milano ANTONIO ZOCCOLI, Executive Board INFN - ATLAS (CERN) Francesca Scianitti – EPPCN Meeting – Rome, May 9 th 2016
But also… Francesca Scianitti – EPPCN Meeting – Rome, May 9 th 2016

Contents The main scheme was proposed by INFN Communications Office on the basis of previous successful experiences and calibrated on the specific context (multiple target, focus on machines and their impact) General contents were agreed with the FCC Project management and approved by INFN and CERN management Specific aspects and questions were agreed with the speakers of the each act. Francesca Scianitti – EPPCN Meeting – Rome, May 9 th 2016
Act n. 1 From the Higgs Boson to New Physics FABIOLA GIANOTTI FERNANDO FERRONI CERN DG INFN President Francesca Scianitti – EPPCN Meeting – Rome, May 9 th 2016
Act n. 1 From the Higgs Boson to New Physics Higgs Boson discovery is not an end point: it opens the door to the Physics of the 21 st century New questions: we know only the 4% of the Universe, what about the rest? The theory that has been confirmed with the Higgs Boson discovery is incomplete. Which direction has to be chosen to explore beyond that theory? Is the LHC enough? Francesca Scianitti – EPPCN Meeting – Rome, May 9 th 2016
Act n. 2 New Machines for New Physics MICHELANGELO MANGANO CERN Theo. physicist GUIDO TONELLI INFN Exp. physicist Francesca Scianitti – EPPCN Meeting – Rome, May 9 th 2016
Act n. 2 New Machines for New Physics Exploration is a major goal of fundamental research New machines will be needed in the future to enlarge our knowledge on the universe at high energy (a path with intermediate phases: LHC, Hi. Lumi, FCC Study) The progress of technologies and competencies have to be continuous. Any interruption would mean lost in time, capabilities and money. To optimize machines improvements, the international community need to share a common plan and establish industrial partnerships Francesca Scianitti – EPPCN Meeting – Rome, May 9 th 2016
Act n. 3 Impact of research infrastructures BERTOLUCCI Former CERN Research Director MASSIMO FLORIO Economist ANTONIO ZOCCOLI INFN Executive Board Francesca Scianitti – EPPCN Meeting – Rome, May 9 th 2016
Act n. 3 Socio-economic impact of research infrastructures Research infrastructures impact can be measured in terms of technology transfer but not only. Other impact factors are: young researchers training, scientific publication, new markets, public services, industrial contracts… Francesca Scianitti – EPPCN Meeting – Rome, May 9 th 2016
Finally… 900 people were seated in the Auditorium Sinopoli hall 300 of them were invited: about 200 FCC Week attendees and 100 invited VIPs (embassies, INFN divisions’ directors, rectors of universities, journalists, industry representatives) 600 of them paid a ticket (5 euros) CERN people followed the event through the CERN webcast service The main sponsor (ASG Superconductors) expressed great satisfaction Francesca Scianitti – EPPCN Meeting – Rome, May 9 th 2016
Organization Critical Aspects The agreement with the FCC Week 2016 organizing team on the public event goals Managing the communication of an event involving CERN DG Fabiola Gianotti. The need to share communication actions with the FCC Week organizing team and not only with press office, which is the institutional counterpart.
