What is Genre? Merriam Webster explains genre as a “category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content. ” When we think of genre in a literary sense we need to consider things like the audience (the discourse community) the tone, the context and the purpose of the piece. Since discourse communities share the same goals the different ways they communicate in those interests result in many different types of genre. Types of genres vary within a discourse community.
