What is Discourse community? John Swales, an influential analyst of written communication, described discourse communities as “groups that have goals or purposes, and use communication to achieve these goals” According to the CCC (College Composition and Communication) “It’s a group of people, members of a community, who share a common interest and who use the same language, or discourse, as they talk and write about that interest. ” As we learn how to understand Discourse Community we look to the ways in which they communicate with each other, bringing in another main course concept, genre.

What is Genre? Merriam Webster explains genre as a “category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content. ” When we think of genre in a literary sense we need to consider things like the audience (the discourse community) the tone, the context and the purpose of the piece. Since discourse communities share the same goals the different ways they communicate in those interests result in many different types of genre. Types of genres vary within a discourse community. Different types of discourse communities can also utilize the same genre

Genre and Discourse Communities Our groups focus was to analyze different genres and discourse communities within our major and/or professions. We will provide examples of different discourse communities and different genres with our field of study or profession. We will also discuss the connection between the genre and the discourse community in how it functions within each of our future professions and/or our majors.

Discourse Communities in Liberal Arts comes from the latin terms liberalis, meaning “free” or “worthy of a free person”, and ars, meaning “art or principled practice”. The purpose of Liberal Arts is to provide students a broad foundation of knowledge that can be used in a wide spectrum of careers, instead of preparing students for one specific career path. Discourse community In Pediatric dentistry In pediatric dentistry they have many sites and doctors that all do things different but they all have the same education, training, values and procedures when it comes to there jobs. They all may have different techniques and major skill sets, but they all do the same things. Genre In Dentistry Pediatric dentistry is not the only genre in dentistry. The dental field has many parts to it with many different specialized fields. Genre in dental fields depends on the interested specialization of the person. There is a long list of dental specializations which makes the dental genre so broad. Biological Sciences Yo! Biological Sciences is the study of life and living organisms, their life cycles, adaptations and environment. There are many different discourse communities within this field since it is so broad. Without these communities communicating effectively, the medical DC as a whole, would not be able to function properly. I Genre, You Genre, He-She-Me Genre I could list all the genres within the biological sciences field but really, who wants to hear all that? Some relevant genres are: ● ● ● Bioengineering- the study of living things through the means of engineering. Botany- the study of plants. Conservation biology- the study of preservation, restoration, and protection of the natural environment. Paleontology- the study of fossils. Pathology- the study of diseases, generally in animals. Zoology- the study of animals.

Discourse Communities in Information Technology is about the study or use of systems (especially computers and telecommunications) for storing, retrieving, and sending information. Discourse Communities within this major are: ● ● ● ● Business analyst systems analyst Administrator Software Engineer Programmer Database manager Information technology manager Each of these field are responsible for upkeep and maintenance of any given computerized system and for the validity and security of any given data.

Genre within Information Technology Genre within this field are: ● ● ● Security of data- some of the careers in this field require us to be able to protect our data against viruses, invalidity, and theft. Usability- any given interface must be at some level of user friendliness for the sake of quality and effectiveness Organized Format- data presented must be legible and is capable to be analysed and review upon any given date.
