Introduction �Disc Golf is exploding as an emerging sport �Over 5800 courses worldwide � 4825 in the USA � 156 in Canada � 54 in Ontario � 3 in Toronto �Ajax, Barrie, Peterborough, Oakville… each have one �Great addition to attract park users
What is Disc Golf? �Some call it Frisbee Golf, or Frolf…but Disc Golf is the most accepted term �Rules are structured similar to Ball Golf �Par 3, 4 and 5’s with lengths in feet instead of yards �Players use special Frisbees, throwing them into an elevated catching basket �Different discs are used for different shots �Challenges include distance, accuracy, wind, trees, water and terrain changes
Who Can Play? �Anybody can play �Enjoy a low impact outdoor activity �Rules are simple � 18 holes takes about 60 -120 minutes �Low cost �One disc only $10 -$20 �Free to play
Community and Park Benefits �Environmentally sound with low impact and little maintenance �Curb mischief by introducing legitimate activity �Course users become park stewards �Course will draw players into Whitby and increase tourism �Fits well with Sports Facility Strategy �Less cost than one tennis court � 18 hole course can serve 72 people easily �Integrate with park improvement/enhancement plan
Park Enhancement �Plant trees and clean up undesired plant material promoting Good Forestry Practices �Replant trees lost due to last years ice storm �Create course interest and safety features �Provide beautification to the park as a whole �New and fun activity for the whole community to enjoy
Costs and Land Requirements �D’Hiller Park has more than adequate space �Co-exists with other park uses (walking, cycling…) �Hole lengths range from 150 ft to 500 ft plus �High benefit to cost ratio �Full 18 Hole Course about $15000 �Phase 1 - $10000 = 18 baskets, signage and tee markers
