SCHEDULED TRIBES As per the Government of India 2011 Census, the Scheduled Tribes population comprise 84, 326, 240 (8. 2%) out of the total population. Mizoram has highest proportion of Scheduled Tribes, which is 94. 5%, while Goa has the lowest proportion, 0. 04%. Main characteristics of Scheduled Tribes are as under: � � � Geographical Isolation Backwardness They have a distinctive culture, language and religion. These tribes are associated with a particular territory or a habitat. They are mostly in hilly regions or forest regions. They are governed by their own customs and traditions. Many of them have their own distinct language or dialect.
