Disability Definitions • Disability: The term was once used to describe people that were mentally retarded, but now commonly refers to people that are unable to participate in activities because of age or even wounds. • Multiple Disability (MD): People that have one or more impairments. • Severe Disability (SD): People that are limited to certain activities because of the extent of a disability. • Multiple Severe Disability (MSD): People that have more than one severe disability and are usually unable to move on their own. • Solomon, 2012, p. 356 -357
Disability Facts • 85% of people diagnosed with mental retardation, (MD, SD, or MSD) remain at home with their parents. • Life expectancy for males and females with MD, SD, and MSD has increased significantly (Males-58 years, Females-60 years). • A sample of aging parents indicated that at least 2/3 of the parents wanted to continue care giving for their disabled children. Solomon, 2012, p. 375 -376.
Disability Culture • While disability culture includes people with many disabilities, the focus here is on individuals with MD, SD, or MSD disabilities. • Being a parent or guardian of a child with a MD, SD, or MSD disability can be lonely and challenging. • However, support groups, classes, and other networks are in place to provide parents and guardians of children with disabilities the necessary resources to be successful in raising a child with MD, SD, or MSD disabilities. Solomon, 2012, p. 371.
Common Causes • Biological and Genetic disorders are common contributors to children with disabilities, MD, SD, or MSD. • Medical errors or negligence can cause disabilities, MD, SD, or MSD. • Children with disabilities, MD, SD, or MSD generally have some type of impairment with their brain functioning, which affects motor, neural, and many other signals and functions. Outlook • While taking care of a child with a disability can be challenging and seem overwhelming, parents will need to implement a plan of care at home. • Once the child and parents adapt to the new plan, bonding begins between the child and parents. • Other parents, are sometimes unable to accept the challenge and will often decide on other methods of care. • Children with disabilities that remain at home with their parents are often able to enjoy a better quality of life; which also is true for the parents as well. Solomon, 2012, p. 376 -377
Decision • Parents of disabled children are often faced with a difficult decision, to provide at home care or institutionalize their child. • While this is a difficult decision to make, studies have shown that parents with other non-disabled children are likely to have a negative impact when institutionalizing a child with a disability. • There are other options, as parents can choose to have providers come to their homes in order to provide services to disabled children, which is a win-win for all involved. Solomon, 2012, p. 380 -381
Perspective • While there are many opinions available about raising children with disabilities, it is all about perspective for the parents. • Research has shown that effective parenting involves a parent knowing when to hold onto their child and knowing when to let go. • Some people contend that why would a person become pregnant with a child that is likely to have a disability? Solomon, 2012, p. 403
Support • There are many supports available for parents of children with moderate to severe disabilities. • These supports include: support groups, research groups, social media groups, and other local community supports. • Parents that do not seek support often feel trapped and isolated, which is why it is important to research and seek out supports. Solomon, 2012, p. 371.
