Direction and Angle Positions and directions
Objectives • Recognise positions and directions • Use the eight compass directions N, S, E, W, NE, NW, SE, SW. • Make and measure clockwise and anticlockwise turns.
Lets label the walls of the room N, S, E and W. (The rhyme is Never Eat Shredded Wheat! North, East, South, West) • Stand facing north • Turn to face east, south and then west. • Did you turn clockwise or anticlockwise? Remember that a clockwise turn is to the right like the hands of a clock.
• Stand facing North again. • Make a quarter turn to face West. • Did you turn clockwise or anticlockwise? Remember that a quarter turn is a right-angled turn.
Stand facing North again. Make a half turn clockwise. Which direction are you facing? Stand facing North. Make a 180 degree turn anti-clockwise. Does anyone know which direction you are facing now?
Halfway between North and East is called North-East. • What is half-way between North and West? • North-west • What is halfway between East and South? • South-east • What is halfway between South and West? • South-west
Start at South and turn anticlockwise through two-right angles (Two right angles are the same as 180 degrees) In which direction are you facing now? • You could try out some of your own commands with a partner or challenge yourself by starting on a NE/NW/SE/SW position. • Right angle turn/ quarter turn/ 90 degree turn • Two quarter turns/180 degree turns • Three quarter turns/ 270 degree turn • Full turn/360 degrees.
Who thinks that they could make and label a compass? Use it to apply your knowledge of angle turns, rotation and directions and to complete your quiz. NW N W NE E SW SE S
