What is the function of a DOP? • A direct object tells who or what receives the action of the verb. • It can be either a person or a thing Ex. 1: Elena pegó a Pablo. • “Pablo” receives the action (who-person) Ex. 2: Pablo pegó la pelota. • “la pelota” receives the action (what-thing)
Direct Object Pronouns • In English, we often talk about things in general terms. • To avoid repetition, we replace the words with direct object pronouns, such as him, her, it and them. -Do you eat breakfast every morning? Yes, I eat it. -¿Comes el desayuno cada mañana? Sí, yo lo como. • We can do the same thing in Spanish.
Pronombres de Objeto Directo • The Spanish direct object pronouns are: singular plural me (a mí) nos (a nosotros) te (a ti) os (a vosotros) lo la (a él, a Ud ) (a ella, a Ud) los las (a ellos, a Uds) (a ellas, a Uds) IMPORTANT: Direct Object Pronouns must match the noun it replacesmasculine or feminine, singular or plural.
To replace the name of a thing, use the following Direct Object Pronouns: Singular lo la (it-masculine) (it-feminine) Plural los las (them-masc) (them-fem)

Three things to remember! 1. Used to avoid repeating a direct object noun. 2. In Spanish, the direct object pronoun (DOP) must match the noun it replaces- masculine or feminine, singular or plural! 3. In Spanish, the direct object pronoun comes immediately before the verb! **Just like reflexive pronouns, if (and only IF) you have 2 verbs, it can go before the 2 verbs OR attached to the infinitive (second verb). NEVER between the 2 verbs. (Subject) + DOP + Verb(s)
**Take the following steps: ** 1. Find the verb Ex. I open the door. Yo abro la puerta. 2. Ask what (qué) + verb? What do I open? Qué abro? 3. Answer = DON (direct object noun) the door = DON la puerta =DON 4. Replace the DON with the DOP = it DOP = la 5. Put DOP before the verb. I open it. Yo la abro.

I need the green skirt. = I need it. Yo necesito la falda verde. = Yo la necesito. 4. She wants the magazines. = She wants them. Ella quiere las revistas. = Ella las quiere. 5. I see you. Yo te veo. 6. Did you return the book to the library? Yes, I returned it. ¿Devolviste el libro a la biblioteca? Sí, lo devolví.
