DIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS Pronombres de objeto directo

Direct objects You already know your subjects pronouns – yo, tú, él/ella/Ud, nosotros, vosotros, ellos/ellas/Uds. l In this presentation we are going to look at another set of pronouns. To begin with, think of one way of completing each sentence: l l l I saw _______. I ate ____. I drank ______. I met ____.

l Direct objects Did you come up with something similar to these? l I saw Mary. l I ate the broccoli. l I drank a glass of Kool-Aid. l I met your parents. l l Whatever you put into the blanks is a direct object.

l DOP’s answer the question “Who? ” or “What? ” For example… l I carried. (What? ) l l. I I carried an umbrella. (DOP) helped. (What? ) l I helped the old lady cross the street. (DOP)

Direct object pronouns l DOP’s substitute a pronoun for each noun. l I saw Mary (noun). >> I saw her (DOP). l I ate the broccoli (noun). >> I ate it (DOP). l I drank a glass of Kool-Aid (noun). >> I drank it (DOP). l I met your parents (noun). >> I met them (DOP).

What are the forms? l me > me l you > te l him > lo l her > la l it > lo, la l us > nos l you all (familiar) > os l them > los, las

l me, te, nos l Since you’ve already seen reflexive verbs, you are familiar with me, te, and nos. The direct object and reflexive forms for these three pronouns are identical. The other pronouns-- lo, la, los, las – look a lot like the articles (except el > lo).

Here are some examples. ¿Tú me ves? l María me mira. l El profesor me llamó. l In each case, a different subject does something and I am the direct recipient of that action. l

Now look at these sentences and fill in the blank: l ¿Dónde compraste el diccionario? l Lo compré en Amazon. com. l ¿Dónde está mi pluma? l La dejaste [you left it] en la mesa. l ¿Dónde están los caramelos? l Los comí.

La, lo las, los! l In each sentence, we’ve replaced a noun (diccionario, pluma, caramelos) with a pronoun (lo, la, los): l l el diccionario >> lo la pluma >> la Los caramelos >> los Note that we place the object pronoun in front of the verb, unlike in English. l Los comí.

¡Practiquemos! Fill in the blank with the correct DOP. l ¿Dónde está mi cuaderno? l ____ dejaste [you left it] encima del escritiorio. Ah, sí, ____ veo. Gracias.

¿Qué tal lo hiciste? l ¿Cuándo hiciste la cama? l La hice a las 8: 00. l ¿Sacaste la basura? l Claro, ya la saqué. l ¿Dónde están los platos? l Los puse en el lavaplatos. l ¿Y el césped? l Ya lo corté.

Y la respuesta es… l l l Oye, Luis, ¿qué es esta nota en mi mesa? Yo te llamé ayer, pero tú no estabas. ¿Cuándo me llamaste? Yo estaba en mi despacho casi todo el día. Te llamé a las 3: 00. Ah, tuve una reunión corta. Por eso no estaba en mi despacho cuando me llamaste.
