DIRECT AND REPORTED SPEECH CLASS 7 B WEEK 5

Direct Speech DIRECT SPEECH means the actual words used by the speakers are enclosed in quota tion marks. (a) David says, "I like that one. " (b) "I’m mending socks, " says Bella. (c) Lena says, " You look well. " (d) “I’ll be there at six", says Peter. (e) "It happened yesterday, " says John. (f) Lena said, "You look well. " (g) Peter says, “I’ve seen it. "

Reported Speech We use reported speech when the words of the speaker are given as reported (or quoted) by someone else. When direct speech is changed to reported speech, various changes are made: (a) David says that he likes that one. (b) Bella says that she is mending socks. (c) Lena says that he (or she) looks well. (d) Peter says that he will be there at six. (e) John says that it happened yes terday. (f) Lena said that he looked well. (g) Pete said that he had seen it

RULES 1. Quotation marks are not used in reported speech. 2. The passage of reported speech is introduced by an expression such as: . Peter says that. . . David replied that. . . He agreed that. . . Lena told me that. . . 3. You should try to avoid using "said" too often: too many "saids" make your writing sound monotonous.

Personal Pronouns • When the dialogue is reported by another person, pronouns of the first and second persons • (I, me, we, us, you) are usually changed into those of the third person: • Direct Speech: "I am going soon, " Dominic replied. • Reported Speech: Dominic replied that he was going soon. • Reported Speech: He replied that there was the answer.
