Dip Plus in General – structure of course What is the course like? 4 modules to be taken over your second year – same textbook (a) Structural & Physical Organic Chemistry – this holiday (b) Reaction mechanisms I – April Sem (c) Reaction mechanisms II - September holiday (d) Molecular characterisation methods – October Sem

If you thought organic chemistry is only about…… Nomenclature Exam questions like: Name this

If you thought organic chemistry is only about…… Nomenclature Exam questions like: Name this compound… Naming compounds can now be done by computer Remembering lists of reactions Exam questions like: Describe properties and synthetic methods of acid chlorides…. . At a higher level, more important to understand principles behind reactions

(a) Structural & Physical Organic Chemistry Topics like – Delocalisation, conjugation and aromaticity Basicity

(a) Structural & Physical Organic Chemistry Topics like – Delocalisation, conjugation and aromaticity Basicity and acidity in organic compounds Enantiomerism and stereoisomers Why are polyphenols supposed to be good for you? Why is too much barbecued food bad for you? Why is vinegar sour but not alcohol?

(b) & (c) Reaction mechanisms I & II Why do you need acids/bases to

(b) & (c) Reaction mechanisms I & II Why do you need acids/bases to do ester hydrolysis? Prediction of isomers produced in benzene reactions Why does the Markovnikov rule work?

(d) Molecular characterisation methods How do you tell the structure of an organic compound?

(d) Molecular characterisation methods How do you tell the structure of an organic compound? Chemical tests? – decolourising bromine, silver mirror etc. tell you only functional groups Mass Spectrum Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Infra-red spectrum

Dip Plus in General - Some Features – the bad news - does not

Dip Plus in General - Some Features – the bad news - does not replace core modules (so above course requirements) i. e. about 2 hours of extra lessons per week during term time + holiday lessons -must complete all 4 modules to get certificate; if not, modules taken will be reflected as an Enhancement module in the certificate - must take modules in the order (a) then (b) then (c). Has to take within one year – 3 rd year difficult because of project and IAP - once fail, cannot repeat i. e. out of the course

Dip Plus in General - Some Features – the good news - when you

Dip Plus in General - Some Features – the good news - when you graduate you get an extra certificate -marks are not computed into your GPA i. e. if do not well/fail no consequences on your diploma GPA Just a reminder to keep things in perspective…… Although I would like you all to perservere right to the end, remember that pulling out/failure is not a black mark against you…. Dip plus should take last priority after your core modules and your CCAs because it does not appear in your diploma Dip plus does not always get you exemptions from modules in university. Many students have done well in university even though there was no dip plus at the time…. It just means they had to put in more effort in their first year.

Why should you take this course? and spend extra hours studying? This course will

Why should you take this course? and spend extra hours studying? This course will not get you exemptions from chemistry modules in university - NTU and overseas universities exemption based on your overall GPA - NUS module exemptions usually based on taking placement tests Take this course to get better scores in university -You are interested in chemistry and want to know to the fundamental principles of organic chemistry – may also help you to make sense of some topics in Biochemistry & other chemistry modules in LSCT -You intend to go to university to do chemistry -You intend to do life science courses in NUS or NTU and want to get good grades for the compulsory chemistry modules – also useful for things like biochemistry of enzymes…. .

Assessment for this module – Structural and Physical Organic Chemistry Homework – 50% Typically

Assessment for this module – Structural and Physical Organic Chemistry Homework – 50% Typically 4 -6 problems from the textbook – I will put out list of problems beforehand (but may not require all) – can try to do in advance Hand in by the stipulated dates (see later) Assignment – 10% Look up a particular topic and right a two-page report during break (see later) Exam – 40% Exact date to be fixed. But most likely second. Tuesday of term For examples of past two exams – see website No group work, no presentations

Attendance Policy Attendance is taken not because of debarrment purposes but so can gauge if there is critical mass for repeat lecture. Because this module is held during holidays, some of you will miss one or two lectures…… also people in Wuhan who are away for most of holiday. . Responsibility on you to self-study and read the lecture material and do homework on time even if there is no repeat lecture. I put up lecture notes (scribblings during lectures) on web page – but give about a day before they get uploaded. You should be with the help of the lecture notes and textbook be able to understand Most lectures except possibly the last two – on conformational analysis and Stereochemistry – bec need 3 -D model.

Homework – Please hand in by the day stipulated even if you cannot do

Homework – Please hand in by the day stipulated even if you cannot do it well. Some of the questions are difficult – if you cannot get the answers after About 15 minutes on each question, just write as best you can to thow that you have attempted to do it Four good reasons not to hand in work late - Your sheet may get lost because handed individually - More difficult for me to mark - More importantly, marked homework can be returned to you, The answers can be discussed, revealed on website. - If homework is handed in just before examination, you will not learn anything from it.

Homework – If you cannot hand in work because you are not in Singapore

Homework – If you cannot hand in work because you are not in Singapore on the deadline - Hand in earlier - If you are e. g. on attachment scan and send by e-mail - Ask for permission by e-mail to hand in later. I expect homework to be in the day after you arrive back in Singapore. Penalties for handing in work late - Marks will be capped at the lowest mark of those who did hand in on time - Work may not be returned to you in time for your revision.

Textbook: Organic Chemistry, Mc. Murry, 8 th Edition Power points and tutorial questions will be taken from there. Try to bring with you…. There is a solutions manual – if you get hold a copy, do not cheat ! Very easy to tell if you are copying from the manual Payment for this module: $30 – wait until I give instructions (probably some time at the end of the holiday For the other modules - do not pay until registered for them If you have to withdraw… Let me know by two weeks (i. e. Lecture 4) – if so then you do not need to pay

Last Remarks about this course 1. I am going to follow the textbook very closely – The power points are based on the textbook so notes are not going to be provided except for special topics. 2. This is a rather intensive course so you need to try to go through the lecture material (1) on the ‘rest’ day (2) during the ‘break’ week. Look at other websites/books to get a fresh view. 3. Unlike your other lectures, it is not my aim to entertain you with chemistry – my aim is very simple that you learn basic organic chemistry theoretical concepts of roughly equivalent to A level H 3 or 1 st year undergraduate level Organic Chemistry – either through lectures or through your own learning – so no projects, no presentations, just straightforward questions and exam.
