Digital Terminology
Bitmap A representation consisting of rows and columns of dots of a graphic image stored in computer memory. To display a bitmap image, the dots are converted to pixels.
Pixel The small squares or units that combine together to form a digital image on a display screen.
Resolution The number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed, determining the quality of an image.
RGB stands for red, green and blue. In design for screen display, such as web design, colours are defined in terms of a combination of these three basic additive colours.
CMYK stands for cyan (C), magenta (M), yellow (Y), and (black) (K). This is the subtractive colour model used in a four colour printing process.
PPI – (Pixels per inch) A unit for measuring resolution in digital imagery. DPI – (Dots per inch) A unit of measurement of image quality for printers.
Vector Graphic A graphic made up of mathematically defined shapes and line segments called vectors. Vector graphics can be edited by moving and resizing either the entire graphic or the lines and segments that compose the graphic. These graphics are enlarged and reduced with no loss of resolution.
Rasterization The task of taking an image described in a vector graphics format (lines and shapes) and converting it into a raster image (pixels or dots) for output on a video display or printer, or for storage in a bitmap file format.
Typography The art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed. The arrangement of type involves selecting typefaces, point sizes, line lengths, line-spacing, and letter-spacing, and adjusting the space between pairs of letters.
