The mother is from New Mexico and the father from Massachusett s. They both moved here for school. Both of the grandparents are teachers. The father now works in construction and the mother is a stay at home mom.
Some Funds of Knowledge we encountered were construction, couponing, and realty.
Some assumptions we had before our home visit was that the family had a lot of money, because they send their child to a private charter school. Also, the neighborhood they live in reinforced our assumptions. After our first visit, we realized they live on a very tight budget.
Never judge a book by its cover. It is important to know each family in your classroom so that you can create more applicable and appropriate lessons. It also builds trust and community when you involve families in their child’s education.
Some ways we connected with the family were through shared interest in Mixed Martial Arts, sharing parenting advice, and mutual disagreements with the Military.
This book helped us, because we got to read first hand accounts of other teachers that had done the same thing we were going to do. They talked about their anxieties and nervousness with home visits which made us more comfortable with the situation.
OVERALL REFLECTION v Overall, I really enjoyed our experience. We learned so much from the family and they have such an interesting history. It was very neat to see parents give so much for their children and devote their lives to their education and well-being. I was also surprised how much we had in common with the family. The mother was looking for a cheaper and closer activity for her sons to participate in. I had a connection with a gym that offered what she wanted and was right down the street from Satori. Also, Becka related a lot with her, because she has a child of her own and they shared parenting tips often. It was interesting how natural the conversations went for us. We were expecting for there to be a lot of awkward moments, but there were very few. The only times we had off moments were when we stumbled on touchy subjects on accident. For example, we asked about her siblings and what they do for a living. It ended up that one of her siblings was in a mental institution so we just moved on to the next question. All in all the visits were a success and the mother was very talkative so we got a lot of information about everything. Also, Becka got to understand the oldest son better as a student from the visits. He was in her class and they got to connect more in the classroom. We cannot wait to return next semester to find out more about or beautiful family!
