Digital / Virtual Slides • A digital whole slide is created from many small pictures • The area sensor of the camera (chip) can see one position of the stage • By moving the stage those field of views (FOV) will be recorded one by one and stitched together by the control software of the scanner • An average slice contains about 2000 such small squares on 40 x magnification

Scanning speed and throughput Leica is claiming a 32 s scanning time per slide

Scanning speed and throughput Leica is claiming a 32 s scanning time per slide – but this excludes the time necessary for slide handling. They claim a throughput of 81 slides per hour, which translates into a real scanning time of 45 s per slide. On the other hand, the PANNORAMIC® 1000 has a throughput of up to 100 slides per hour and 2000 slides per day.

Scanning quality Leica uses line/TDI scanning technology, which excludes the possibility of Z-Stack or extended focus features. On the contrary, our scanners use area scanning, which makes both these features possible.

Flexibility Although labeled “Research Use Only”, the Aperio GT 450 lacks a fluorescent option.

Flexibility Although labeled “Research Use Only”, the Aperio GT 450 lacks a fluorescent option. It is also unable to handle double-width slides. Our scanners provide solutions for these. The Aperio GT 450 comes with a single objective, while both our scanners have the option of two or even more objectives.

Research use only Although marketing materials for the Aperio GT 450 are hinting at clinical use, it is still for research use only. On the other hand, both our scanners can be used for diagnostic purposes in several markets.
