DIGITAL LEAPS (DL): a new Pathway of LEAPS Facilities into the Post-Corona Era The DL proposal is made up by four projects: • • STAndardisation for Remote Sample Handling (STARS) LEAPS Integrated Platform (LIP) Reference Design for a Fully Automated User Beamline Collaboration Platform for LEAPS Members: From Technology News to “Innovation Mall” Further LEAPS internal projects related to Developments of Facilities and to Platforms and Networks are proposed and they may be included in a different time scale.
DIGITAL LEAPS STARS: STAndardisation for Remote Sample handling STARS aims: • Make sample tracking F. A. I. R. compatible • Help users and user offices to manage samples • Improve procedures already in place at facilities and exploit them to full capacity Work Packages for an inclusive project: 1) Database for Experiment Environment Information 2) Digital sample handling 3) Use of commercial IT tools to facilitate remote access and operation 4) Exploitation of the collaboration platform for LEAPS members 5) Sustainable digital repositories on wayforlight. eu 6) Standardised procedures on mail-in / remote access across facilities 7) Hybrid training and Digital Twinning 8) Scale-up LEAPS experience to include ARIE

DIGITAL LEAPS LIP: LEAPS Integrated Platform • The development of an integrated platform, facility independent interface system to access and operate our facilities, will be the back bone of this DIGITAL LEAPS project. • The implementation of this new platform requires to involve competences within LEAPS on information technologies, industrial applications and innovation. A survey of available industrial standards shall be carried out prior to any concrete action in this direction.

DIGITAL LEAPS LIP will enable faster and synchronized progress for intelligent & resilient operation of facilities Work packages – WP 1: LEAPS Integrated Platform (LIP) – WP 2: Scientific Computing (SC) – WP 3: Machine Learning (ML) – WP 4: Virtual Diagnostic (VD) – WP 5: Androids for Remote Access (ARA) – WP 6: Remote Training (RT) Role of LIP Coordination between centres (we are stronger together), facilitate information exchange and fellowship programme, define interfaces, be inclusive, integration with existing work that is already being done at facilities.
DIGITAL LEAPS Reference Design for a Fully Automated User Beamline This project aims to study how an ideal, self-aligning and self-calibrating beamline could look like! Ø Ø Which diagnostics is needed where along the beam path? How should the beamline components be designed and constructed? What control software is needed? How should detectors be constructed so they can auto-calibrate? Proposed work-packages ü ü ü Automation and fault tolerance of repetitive tasks: beamline alignment, focus optimization… Automatic detector calibration, software configuration, parameter selection Sample tracking, loading, changing Remote experimenter in the loop: remote data analysis, experiment feedback, remote presence Beyond remote desktop: Improving beamline control interfaces for remote presence Kick-off the project by a preliminary phase in which the technical and scientific staff at facilities should be contacted and surveyed to define the different needs and objectives

DIGITAL LEAPS Outlook • DIGITAL LEAPS shows a pathway towards the development of a digital transformation of European Research Infrastructures. • The aim is to turn the experience gained during the Corona pandemic into an opportunity towards the development of more resilient, efficient and reduced energy footprint research facilities. • We believe that this will be a crucial step in pursuing scientific answers to the societal challenges of the future.
