Digital exam in Aalto University: guidance and regulations • Options for holding electronic examinations at Aalto University: • e-exam room, contains services for monitoring and recording them • My-Courses, the centrally administered learning environment • some other digital system offered by the university • Electronic examinations as a form of course completion are not always identical to their paper counterparts • the time given to complete an e-examination in class may differ from that given to complete the paper version of the exam • Registration practices for e-exams taken through another online learning environment or other university system are the same as for traditional paper -based exams
• Exams in the online learning environment or other university system • may be taken on university premises using a university computer or the exam-taker’s computer, • or at a freely chosen location using the exam-taker’s own computer. • The exam organiser sets the time, place and duration of the exam • Evaluation and publication of results of e-exams follows the Aalto University General Guidelines on Teaching and Studying. When course credits are earned solely by taking an e-exam, the date of completion marked in the student information system is always the examination date • E-exams results will be made available in the system where the exam was taken or in some other manner determined by the exam organiser once the organiser has evaluated the exam
Digital exams in My. Courses • Online exam: • teacher creates an exam in the My. Courses workspace using the Quiz or Assignment activities • student takes the exam at home or some other suitable location at the given time (e. g. , Fri 10 AM– 11 AM or has 2 hours to complete the exams from the time of starting it) • Home exam / flexible exam / home assignment: • teacher creates assignments in My. Courses • student submits online text or attachment before the deadline. Note: • Possibility to use time limits • Assessment criteria should be made visible to students • Plenty of question types available
My. Courses quiz and assignment activities as an exam Plan the kind of exam you want, the question types you want to use, the kind of learning you want to assess • Quiz offers you 18 different question types: e. g. , Stack questions, multiple-choice, short answers, essays • Quiz examples: https: //mycourses. aalto. fi/course/view. php? id=11864 • Using Quiz is a 2 -steps process: 1. 2. create the Quiz-activity and specify settings and add questions • Assignment activity: student can answer by writing online text or submit a file as an attachment • Turnitin assignment can also be used
What kind of questions to ask? Multiple-choice • clearly formulated problems (own words, not straight from notes/books) • short statements based on common misconceptions & true statements that do not answer the questions Matching • • logically ordered choices to reduce effect of guessing, use some choices more than once in the same exercise Short answers • • • tests basic knowledge of key facts and terms can be used to test higher thinking skills, including analysis or evaluation offer a mix of questions: some for explaining a term, others for finding a term
Essays • • • Offers students an opportunity to explain understanding Open written responses Ask students to compare/evaluate/contrast/analyse/explain Remember: Word the task clearly and allow time for thinking and writing Consider distributing your exam questions in advance. This gives your students an equal chance to prepare and may increase the quality of their responses Computational or coding exercises • Use Aalto VDI to allow software usage • Give work-life oriented assignments • Remember constructive alignment
Control digital exams How to ensure that student are who they say they are and do what they are supposed to do? • When Aalto usernames are in use: sanctions are specified for misuse of usernames and digital systems • Use time limits • Randomise questions from question bank or randomise question order • Applied assignments: student reviews/criticizes/compares/claims/ explains selected methods/tools/terms/themes in exam
• Use Zoom or Teams –video connection to monitor students during the exam • Use Turnitin –assignments (prevents plagiarisms) • Make assessment criteria visible to students (add criteria like knowledge retrieval skills, source criticism and good scientific writing) • Use open-book exams
