Digital Etiquette
Digital Etiquette Digital etiquette is the set of rules that guide how to use the internet in a manner that doesn’t interfere with other individual’s digital rights. It also reflects the unique electronic nature of the medium.
Importance of Netiquette v Digital etiquette assists the business to navigate the business cultural diversities. It is important for the establishment effective intercultural communications with individuals from culturally diverse backgrounds. v Essential in communication. The lack of netiquette can cause substantial problems in the workplace and schooling. v Netiquette would be the rules society dictates we utilise when we are online.
The Online Disinhibition Effect, is characterised by a loosening, or in some cases a complete abandonment, of social restrictions and inhibitions, that would be otherwise present in a normal face-to-face interaction. Six factors: v Dissociative anonymity – we are anonymous but moreover, it is not us writing, posting, sharing, etc. v Invisibility – the concept of “you can’t see me” v Asynchronicity – Lack of accountability v Solipsistic introjection – the sense that one’s mind has become merged with the mind of the person they are communicating with online v Dissociative imagination – Not being part of the real world, where our imagination is not part of ourselves, nor is there accountability v Minimisation of authority – There is no direct policing involved, so therefore I can’t be held accountable
Standards of Conduct v It is a set of standards on social, environmental and ethical issues within the context that it is provided. v Companies who have such standards are often referred to as Acceptable User Policy (AUP). v There’s standards are often used as a guideline for employees and users but also in terms of managing staff.
Inappropriate Conduct and effect on society v Many people feel uncomfortable talking to others about their digital etiquette. v Often rules & regulations are created or the technology is simply banned to stop inappropriate use. v It is not enough to create rules and policy, we must teach everyone to become responsible digital citizens in this new society. v Essentially, as a participant of technology driven society, one is expected to demonstrate appropriate behaviour and choices in the digital community as well as understand the impact and consequences of those choices.
The Role of the Rules & Policies v The rule & policies of Digital Etiquette are mainly used to maintain a sort of responsibility for the users because without them there would be no censure, no consequences and no legal responsibility. v These are important because they help to maintain a sense if selfworth which goes to the element of Digital Health & Wellness. v Without any guidelines our interactions would result in a negative consequence.
