Digging Deep Luke 6: 46 -49 But why do you call Me “Lord, ” and do not do the things which I say? Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.
Dig Deeper Than the Doctrines of Men And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men (Matt. 15: 9). Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees (Matt. 16: 12). Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world (1 Jn. 4: 1). As I urged you when I went into Macedonia--remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine (1 Tim. 1: 3). If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed (1 Tim. 4: 6).
Dig Deeper Than Family Religion Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. For me to write the same things to you is not tedious, but for you it is safe. Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation! For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh, though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so: circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless (Phil. 3: 1 -6).
Dig Deeper Than Family Religion But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former conduct in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it. And I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries in my own nation, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers. But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb and called me through His grace, to reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately confer with flesh and blood (Gal. 1: 11 -16).
Dig Deeper Than Just Going To God In Time of Need Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Heb. 4: 16). I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing (John 15: 5). Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. (1 Cor. 15: 58).
Dig Deeper Than Finding An Acceptable Social Life Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you (1 Tim. 4: 16). And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also (2 Tim. 2: 2). But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them (2 Tim. 3: 14).
Dig Deeper Than A Form of Godliness But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! (2 Tim. 3: 1 -5).
Dig Deeper Than A Form of Godliness Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. (Rom. 10: 1 -4). There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death (Prov. 16: 25). But why do you call Me “Lord, ” and do not do the things which I say? (Luke 6: 46).
Dig Deeper Than A Good Moral Life There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always (Acts 10: 1 -2). Who will tell you words by which you and all your household will be saved. (Acts 11: 14). And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord…(Acts 10: 48).
Dig Deeper Than A Sincere Religious Life Indeed, I myself thought I must do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. This I also did in Jerusalem, and many of the saints I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them. And I punished them often in every synagogue and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly enraged against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities (Acts 26: 9 -11). Then Paul, looking earnestly at the council, said, “Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day” (Acts 23: 1).
Dig Deeper Than A Sincere Religious Life Hear - So he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do You want me to do? ” Then the Lord said to him, “Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do” (Acts 9: 6). Obey - And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord (Acts 22: 16). Be Faithful - But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified (1 Cor. 9: 27).
Dig Deeper Than A Superficial Knowledge of the Word But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God (2 Cor. 4: 2). For we are not, as so many, peddling the word of God; but as of sincerity, but as from God, we speak in the sight of God in Christ (2 Cor. 2: 17). For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light (2 Cor. 11: 13 -14). Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Tim. 2: 15).
Dig Deeper Than A Superficial Knowledge of the Word Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior (2 Pet. 3: 1 -2). as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ…(2 Pet. 3: 17 -18).
Dig Deeper Than Group Religion Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world (Jas. 1: 27). Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin (Jas. 4: 17). Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith (Gal. 6: 10). Be hospitable to one another without grumbling (1 Pet. 4: 9). Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matt. 5: 16).
