MOUTH Function: � Both mechanical and chemical digestion begins in the mouth. Mechanical = Teeth Chemical = saliva (enzymes) Length: � 3 inches/10 cm Time: � On average 30 seconds to chew food thoroughly

SMALL INTESTINE Function: � Where almost all chemical digestion and absorption of nutrients takes place. Length � 20 -25 ft. (for this class, just put 15 ft. ) � 2 -3 cm in diameter Time � Upwards of 6 hours.
LARGE INTESTINE Function: � Holding tank of the digestive system. Final absorption of water into the bloodstream. Remaining material is readied for elimination as feces/poop. Length � 4 -5 feet/1. 5 meters (put 5 ft. for our class) Time � Upwards of 2 days/30 -40 hours

Intestine to Lg. Intestine = 15 feet Lg. Intestine to Colon (EXIT) = 5 feet Attach the string to your card at the appropriate distance between each part. 4. • Use tape to attach your string to the card.
