Digestion Notes Where Digestion begins in the mouth
Digestion Notes
Where? • Digestion begins in the mouth and ends in the small intestine. • Digestion is the process of changing food into a material the body can use. • Many organs work together to convert food into energy.
Digestion Continued… • Food + Oxygen (O 2) = energy
Energy Production through Digestion • Cell metabolism: the chemical activity of a cell. • Anabolism: the building up of all body parts from amino acids (proteins). • Oxidation: the use of oxygen to break down sugars in the body tissues to produce energy. • Catabolism: the breaking down of food which causes energy to be released.
Energy= A T P (Adenosine Triphosphate)
End Products of Digestion: • Carbohydrates-- glucose (sugar) • Fats-- fatty acids and glycerol • Proteins- amino acids
Kidneys • Remove waste products from the blood. • They excrete liquid from the body. • A tube called the ureter leads from each kidney to the urinary bladder.
Kidneys continued… • From here it goes into the urethra and out the external opening of the body. The two kidneys are located in the small of the back on either side of the spine.
