DIFFFRACTION OF WAVES
DIFFRACTION OF WAVES Diffraction of waves is a phenomenon in which waves spread out as they pass through an aperture or small obstacle.
Radio signals spread to areas behind an obstacle (hill or building).
The effect of diffraction is obvious only if (a) the size of aperture/ slit or obstacle, a is small enough. ( a ) (b) the wavelength, is large enough ) (c) the frequency, f is low. ( f
Diffraction of water waves Small slit : a The effect of diffraction is very obvious The wave are circular and appear to originate from the small slit
Split waves, combine fast become plane waves. Clear diffraction
Split waves, takes longer way to combine become plane waves. blur diffraction
long (low frequency short (high frequency

DIFFRACTION OF LIGHT 1. Light is diffracted if it passes through a narrow slit comparable in size to its wavelength ( approximately 10 -7 m ) 2. The effect of diffraction is very obvious when the size of slit/ aperture decrease
Light waves will be diffracted if (a) light is propagated through a pin hole or a tiny slit is similar to that of the light wavelength. ( a ) (b) the light source must be monochromatic i. e light of one colour or one wavelength only. Monochromatic light can be produced from visible light using colour filter.
DIFFRACTION OF SOUND WAVE The sound spreads around the corner or an obstacle. Sound waves are more easily diffracted in comparison to light waves because the wavelength of sound waves are much longer than the wavelength of light waves.
