Orchestras – What is an Orchestra? An Orchestra is made up of multiple groups of instruments such as, percussion, brass, string and woodwind. Orchestras will normally play classical music, but there are different types of orchestra such as Romantic Orchestra and Symphony Orchestras. In an orchestra there can be anywhere from 15 instruments if playing a chamber piece or at least 90 in a full scale orchestra.

Brass Bands - What is an Brass Band? A brass band is a band that is made of brass instruments accompanied by some percussion instruments. The instruments in a british brass band are: 1 soprano cornet, 9 cornets, 1 flugel horn, 3 tenor horns, 2 baritone horns, 2 tenor trombones, 1 bass trombone, 2 euphoniums, 4 tubas, which are accompanied by 2 or 3 of any of the following instruments: timpani, glockenspiel, snare drums. Wind Bands – What is a Wind band? • Wind bands are made up of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments that are sometimes accompanied by a double bass or bass guitar. Sometimes wind bands will include a piano or a harp and in extreme rare occasions an electric guitar.

Chamber Ensembles – What is a Chamber Ensemble? A Chamber Ensemble is a musical group that play chamber music. Chamber music is a form of classical that is composed to be played by a small group of musicians. Traditionally this sort of music would be played in a large room or a palace chamber, giving it the name Chamber Music. Chamber music is made up of woodwind, brass and string. The instruments that make up this type of ensemble are: Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet, Flute, Piccolo, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Harp with the assistance of a Timpani for percussion. Rock Bands – What is a Rock Band? Rock bands are musical groups that are made up if of either 1 or 2 electric guitars, an electric bass, a drum kit, a keyboarr and a vocalist. Rock music originated in the 1950 s and originated as Rock and Roll and some of the big rock and roll artists in this time were Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley and Ray Charles. Rock music also uses elements of R&B and is influenced by Blues and Jazz music.

Pop Groups - What is a Pop Group Pop groups is set out in a similar way to rock bands. They normally consist of an electric guitar, an electric bass, a drum kit, a keyboard and a vocalist, but they specialize in pop music. Modern pop music consists of a piano, a synthesizer and synth drums and a vocalist.

Jazz Bands – What is a Jazz Band? A jazz band is made up of the Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, a Guitar, a Bass Guitar, and a Drum kit. Reference 7 Jazz is a genre of music which was developed in a similar manner to blues, in African-American communities in New Orleans, United States in the late 1800 s and early 1900 s.
