Can Kenyatta be considered the father of African nationalism? • Ghana • Kenya – 1945 Kenyatta, Nkrumah and other African nationalists teamed up with Du. Bois and other black leaders to hold the fifth pan-African congress in Manchester. They became nationalist friends and colleagues. Kenyatta and Nkrumah played an active role at this congress. Nkrumah wanted continental African unity, whereas Kenyatta wanted regional unity and weren’t convinced continental African unity was even possible. Kenya already had a political organisation whereas Nkrumah began his in Ghana. Kenyatta and Nkrumah continued to share ideas, Kenyatta organised a 1947 strike with Nkrumah’s influence. • Gambia
