Diatonic Triads: Major Scale By: Ms. Cummings 20162017
Major Scales Triads • You can build a triad on every note in a major scale just by using the notes in the scale.
Major Scales Triads • These chords are identified by roman numerals OR by the name of the scale degree the triad is built on.
Roman numerals • Upper case roman numerals are used for major chords (i. e. I, IV, V) • Lower case roman numerals are used for minor chords (i. e. ii, iii, vi) • The seventh chord is a diminished chord and is represented with lower case roman numerals and a circle. (i. e. vii◦)
The Primary Triads Only three chords from the major scale are Major. They are the I chord or the tonic, the IV chord or the subdominant, and the V chord or the dominant. These are called the primary chords. Many folk, pop, and classical songs just use these three chords.
