Dialogue • Dialogue is the conversation between characters. • Shows feelings and emotions in the characters.
What Does Dialogue Looks Like? “That burnt my tongue!” said Sam. Ø This is an example of dialogue. It shows that someone is speaking. Ø Each time a new person speaks, a new paragraph starts.
“That burnt my tongue!” said Sam Dialogue always has quotation marks.
“That burnt my tongue!” said Sam BEGINS WITH A CAPITOL LETTER
At the end add ! ? . , “That burnt my tongue!” said Sam The comma is used in place of the period unless the tag comes first. Sam said, “That burnt my tongue. ”
Tag Words Most common is SAID, but you can use others to better describe how the character said those words. Just remember to use a tag word that makes sense! Don’t use questioned if it is a statement. Other tag words: shouted bellowed agreed laughed cried questioned exclaimed sighed
Descriptions • Vague nouns are nouns that do not give any details about the person place or thing. Like in the following sentence: The man drove to the city in his car. • If we replace the vague nouns in the sentence with concrete ones we create a better picture. The steel worker drove to Pittsburgh in his pickup truck.
Using Descriptions • How can we concrete words in this sentence? The girl played with her doll. Harper played with her Monster High Doll.
