Tangerine: Introduction Textual Evidence Say Characterization: Mom “’Wait for me out by the car, please. We can’t have the new owners thinking we left a mess behind’” (1). Response • Bloor has created a mother that is insecure. While preparing to get on the road to their new home in Florida, Mom wants to be sure that she leaves everything in pristine shape for the new owners of the home- not for cleanliness, but for appearances. Mom seems to be painfully aware of how others see her and wants to do what she can to be seen in a positive light. As we learn more about her relationship with her family, this desire to be seen favorably may impact her relationships in the new town. Say – Mean Matter

Tangerine: Introduction Textual Evidence Say Figurative Language: Simile “I heard a loud roar like an animal's, like a predator snarling” (4). Response As Paul and his mom are preparing the leave their home in Houston, Texas for the move to Florida, he has a flashback to the car accident that occurred when he was younger. Paul uses a simile to describe the sound of the approaching car. He realizes that it was not an accident that the car ran him down. He describes the car as sounding “like an animal snarling. ” Paul recalls the sound of the car coming toward him in terms of a beast hunting his prey because that is how he perceived the incident. This imagery of someone being hunted may be an indication of how he feels in his home. He later blames his brother for taking part in the incident, so the hunter- prey imagery may describe his relationship with his brother which is an important part of the Paul’s story.
