What Is Diabetes? • Diabetes is a disease that affects the pancreas. • People with diabetes make no or not enough insulin
Why? • Their insulin cells have been destroyed How? • Doctors aren’t sure but they think it happens when your body tries to fight a virus.
Is that the only way to get diabetes? • Diabetes is mostly hereditary
Are There More Than 1 Type? Yes • Type 1 - Insulin dependant (worse one) When the body doesn’t make insulin. • Type 2 - Insulin independent When your body makes insulin, but can’t use it properly or doesn’t make enough.
What is insulin? • Hormone made by pancreas. It works like a key to open the red blood cells so glucose can enter. • If there’s no insulin the cells can’t get fed
What happens to you when you’re a diabetic? • You have to test your blood sugar daily • Your blood sugar should fall between 70 -120 mg/dl • You regulate your daily insulin shots according to your blood sugar • Urine tests to detect problems during doctor visits • Glycosylated Hemoglobin tests every few months
Glyscosylated Hemoglobin…HUH? • Every few months diabetics get tested to see how much Glyscosylated Hemoglobin is in their red blood cells. • Hemoglobin carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body and carbon dioxide back to the lungs • BUT! when glucose touches hemoglobin it begins to change a little. • Changed hemoglobin is called A 1 or A 2.
Complications? • Hypoglycemia- Too little glucose or too much insulin • Hyperglycemia- Too much glucose or not enough insulin
Symptoms • Hypoglycemia- shaking, fast heartbeat, hunger, weakness, sweating (to treat take in sugar rapidly) • Hyperglycemia- extreme thirst, dry skin, blurry vision, frequent peeing, feeling tired (to treat drink a lot of water)
Prognosis • If you watch your diet and stay at your target blood sugar rate you should be okay. • BUT! Diabetes can make you more suseptable to other diseases
“Fun” Facts • Over 12, 000 children get diabetes every year • 1/15 diabetics has type A
