INTRODUCTION The digital economy and Information & Communication Technology (ICTs) forms part of the priority sectors that Government has identified anticipates growth in as part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4 IR). TVET Colleges need to participate and support government initiatives towards 4 IR through aligning their offerings and curricula with the needs of 4 IR. Thus establishing partnership with industry to update all ICT related offering is an essential step towards realisation of the 4 IR goals. Resolutions taken at the TVET Imbizo includes that there must be a review TVET curriculum every 3 years to adapt to changing industry sector requirements through the establishment of curriculum teams led by the QCTO and made up of SETAs, organized labour, employers, universities, University of Technology, TVET [etc. as determined by the value of each stakeholder’s role]
Background • The Review process of Report 191 was initiated by QCTO in 2013, implemented in 2015. The quality assurer revised the following subjects: Mercantile Law N 4 -N 5, Financial Accounting N 6, Municipal Administration N 5 -N 6, Labour Relations N 5 -N 6 and Travel Office Procedure N 4 • As part of the resolutions and declarations from the 2017 TVET Imbizo, DHET started a process in 2018 to review and update curricula of NATED Report 191 programmes. Experimental review was done with Communication N 4 and Management Communication N 4 (2018) • Was appraised by QCTO and implemented in 2019 • Thirty eight (38) subjects were identified across N 1 to N 6, for review and implementation from 2021 4
Background continued • Curriculum Support Teams established in 2018 comprising: - Industry experts - Institutions of Higher Learning - TVET subject matter experts • Coordinated by the Curriculum Development and Support Directorate • Engineering N 1 -N 6 and Business and Services Studies N 4 -N 6 5
DHET TVET Curriculum updates • Updates focused on content (currency) and formulation of learning outcomes • Changes of +-5% - 30% • Earmarked for implementation in 2021 • Update process done concurrently with development of T&L materials (textbooks) • Textbook Screening completed in August 2020 for 2021 • Assessment unit furnished with updated curricula for incorporation into examination papers 6
DHET/CISCO PARTNERSHIP THROUGH CURRICULUM INNOVATION FOR SUSTAINIBILITY The DHET signed a letter of cooperation with CISCO. The activities of such cooperation includes: • Establishment of Cisco ICT Centres of Excellence • Alignment with Life Orientation (LO) Curriculum: ICT Component • Alignments with National Certificates (Vocational): IT&CS • Development New 4 IR NC(V) Stream: IT&CS Robotics in Partnership with Tshwane University of Technology • Development of NATED Curriculum: Computer Practice: (N 4 Intro to N 6)
CURRICULUM INNOVATION Curriculum Innovation: LO ICT • Working with CISCO academy to introduce latest developments in ICT in Life Orientation. Ø Introduction to Cyber Security. Ø Introduction to Get Connected. Ø Introduction to Internet of Things (Io. T). • LO lecturers trained full implementation in 2021 (50 TVET Colleges). • The 13 TVET colleges to become ICT centres of excellence.

Latest Developments in the Sector As of 2020, Life Orientation will now be called Life Skills and Computer Practice and will appear so on the Certificate issued by Umalusi Phasing out of NSC (Colleges) as of Jan 2021. The last Examination for N 3 Business English and Sake Afrikaans in November 2020. 10
Conclusion • The review/updates of syllabi does not ignore current developments in the offering and changes that may occur in the near future. • A public comments process on the proposed phase out of N 1 -N 3 programmes is underway (Gazette to be published on 06 November 2020) • Although there is the intention to phase out N 1 -N 3, the review process was begun before the approval of the gazette for phase-out. • Lecturer training may be conducted at National, Regional or College level depending on the nature and amount of changes in the review or updates. • List of subjects reviewed will be made available to colleges as and when all processes have been completed. • The review for 2022 has already started in order to complete full programme review. 11
