Development of a leadership program for acute care nurse managers to improve registered nurse and patient satisfaction Paula F. Coe MSN, RN, NEA-BC Doctor of Nursing Practice Student Leadership Development Program Background Nurses in leadership positions rarely receive leadership training or development beyond initial orientation • The Institute of Medicine, Future of Nursing Report (IOM FON) outlines leadership development (LD) for nurses as a strategic priority. • Evidence correlates LD with improved managerial and organizational effectiveness and outcomes. • LD improves both registered nurse (RN) satisfaction and patient satisfaction. Practice Question Does a leadership development program for acute care nurse managers (NM) improve RN satisfaction and patient satisfaction? Synthesis of Evidence Practice Recommendations Leadership development programs based upon theoretical frameworks can impact the development of leadership practices of nurse managers (NMs). • The five practices of exemplary leadership model by Kouzes and Posner (Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, Encourage the heart) was used as the curriculum for this leadership development program. • The Leadership Practice Inventory (LPI Self) a reliable tool (α = 0. 75 -0. 87) will be used to measure leadership practices • The program will include 3 group sessions and 2 individual sessions. • Reflection will be incorporated into both group sessions and individual session to impact LD. Evidence Based Practice Model Practice Changes • Each NM selected one of the five practices to focus upon for improvement • NMs showed improvement in scores for all 5 LPI-Self subscales • The percentage of NMs who outperformed the NDNQI benchmark relating to leadership ability and nursing support improved from 35% to 80% after the intervention • t-statistics for equality of means indicated there was a statistically significant improvement in RN Satisfaction t ( 38) -3. 61(p=. 001) • Patient Satisfaction did not demonstrate any improvement Results/Outcomes
