Developing the CMS Technical Proposal Joel Butler CMS
Developing the CMS Technical Proposal Joel Butler CMS Upgrade workshop April 26, 2010
Technical Proposal • A Technical Proposal – States the physics case for a project or experiment outlining clearly the goals and requirements – It presents the general approach, possibly with options, to executing the project and provides evidence that the proposed approach will indeed successfully achieve the goals and satisfy the requirements • A Technical Proposal is not a “Technical Design Report” (do not need a detailed design or even a unique solution) • I would say that it is close to what is often called a “Conceptual Design Report”
What is Our Goal? • As articulated by our spokesperson in the next three slides – Presented to MB, FB, RRB, etc
Upgrade and planning of LHC shutdowns • Outcome of Chamonix: – 7 Te. V and L >1032 in 2010 -11 with the goal to collect 1 fb-1 • A first long shutdown to raise the energy in 2012. – 13/14 Te. V and L >1033 for 2013 -2014 (2015? ) • A second long shutdown to raise the luminosity in 2015 (2016? ). – 13/14 Te. V and L >1034 for 2016 -2017 -… • A longer term program to reach S-LHC like integrated luminosities – with luminosity levelng at L ~4 -5 x 1034 • LHC has definitely adopted a different operation mode: – 2/3 years of running interleaved by major shutdowns periods • A change in our strategy for the upgrades is needed. • What upgrades can we plan to do in each of these shutdowns to maintain/increase the physics potential of the experiment? 4
2012: HO and Forward Muons Plan to replace all HO ring 1/ring 2 HPDs with Si. PMs during this shutdown. HF new photomultipliers We need to launch this year (now) the production of YE 4, new RPCs, new CSCs (help from DOE/NSF is needed) Funding + production of RPCs (including link boards) Can finish RPC production by start of 2012 (150 chambers) Funding + production of CSCs CSC production in principle 3 years from green light, might be accelerated with extra resource Preparing detailed plans for production/Installation Preparing bat 904 for CSC Production, and produce first chambers this year 5
2015: New beampipe, pixel, HCAL, trigger • Should get the new beampipe in as soon as possible. • Prepare solutions to exploit the reduced diameter of the beam pipe as soon as possible: additional b-layer and, later new, 4 -layer pixel detector. • New photodetectors for Hadronic Calorimetry- Si. PMallowing finer segmentation of read-out in depth. Identify a suitable Si. PM candidate for HB/HE. Validate new electronics chain. Plan for installation/integration of the new electronics. Test beam. • Trigger upgrade: identify/validate new technology candidate (m. TCA? ). • Phase 2 Upgrades: R&D on basic issues. Revised plan for the upgrade of CMS in preparation: deadline June 2010. 6
Schedule and Scope • After discussion, Guido would like to have a draft document at the end of June with a final document at the end of the summer (September) • Scope should be all improvements and upgrades required to maintain/increase the physics potential of the experiment” – This includes efforts to • cope with aging and luminosity increases • Improve efficiency where possible based on operational experience • Make the experiment more robust, more efficient, more reliable and easier to maintain
Schedule - I • For end of June, by taking advantage of substantial work done to describe many of the upgrades, we can have a reasonably complete technical presentation of our current plans – We may not be able to defend all of our claims based on either data or Monte Carlo since we have not had much data, especially at high luminosity, and we have not launched a necessary round of simulation studies to complete what has already been done • Nevertheless we do have some operational experience – Detector simulation works well and can be used reliably for guidance – Event topology may be different from what we thought – We know something about the beam background and may soon know something about neutrons • We now have the tools that will enable us to make some progress in a limited number of carefully chosen studies that could be included in Draft report • So propose we try to achieve the goal of a DRAFT report for end of June
Schedule - II • For September, – We should be able to defend all of our claims based on Monte Carlo (or in some cases on data)
Detailed Scope - I • The known improvement plans (2012) – – – HO HF RPCs and YE 4 PLT Other possibilities • Smaller beam pipe and possible modifications to pixel system on that time frame • Forward mechanical supports (? ) • Forward direction beam instrumentation (BSC replacement, halo counters) • ME 1 E electronics (schedule) • Trigger and DAQ (Less IF than WHEN) – Plans for SX 5/E 904? – What about infrastructure upgrades?
Detailed Scope - II • Beyond 2012 (say 2015/2016) – CSC – HB/HE – Pixel – major upgrade to >3 barrel layers, 3 endcap disks, less material to achieve several goals – Trigger and DAQ (WHEN) – Other
Responsibilities and Funding • As part o f this exercise, Guido wants to initiate the discussion of who is going to do each task, what the costs will be and how they will be shared – Responsibility and cost sharing section is a significant part of this exercise
Suggested Outline • Introduction – Brief overview of the CMS detector and physcis program – Motivation and goals for the improvement and upgrade program – Operational considerations and constraints • Detector Improvements and Upgrades – The detailed list from above • Infrastructure and facility upgrades – At least SX 5, E 904 – Possibly other infrastructure systems – Possibly the forward mechanical support system • Cost and Schedule – Including proposed responsibility and cost sharing plan
Plan and Timeline • Identify people responsible for each section (this week/next week) – Doesn’t mean other people are excluded or that these people will be the main writers but these are the people responsible for getting the task done and conforming to the editorial conventions • In parallel, set editorial conventions and establish outlines (next two weeks) – Learned this was necessary and had to be done carefully but quickly in last exercise • Acquire existing material for inclusion (with some rewriting) into first version • Physics coordinator to • Establish team to write a physics section • Make a list of the highest priority simulation and data studies to be done • Meeting in week of May 17 to kickoff 6 week program to first draft – Weekly video conferences – Meeting in last week of June to pull draft together
Conclusion • This is a difficult assignment, especially the first draft, given all that will be going on this summer, especially during the lead up to ICHEP • We can start with documents already put together and try to improve them and add to them so we will at least have something substantial
