BENEFITS – RESEARCH DATA MANAGEMENT Short-term: ü Increases efficiency. ü Saves time and effort. Long-term: ü Data preservation and re-use. ü Easier sharing and collaboration. ü Allows others to build on research. ü Raises visibility and research profile.
BENEFITS – OPEN RESEARCH ü ü ü Impact: OA research cited more frequently. Research lifecycle can be accelerated: published, read, cited, built on. Public good: sharing scholarship and intellectual wealth.
THE OPEN EXETER PROJECT Embedding good practice in research data management Promoting materials openness of research
DAF SURVEY AND INTERVIEWS 1 284 responses to survey. Included all types of researcher from PGR students to professors from all six academic colleges based at all three of the University’s campuses in Exeter and Cornwall. CURRENT ISSUES Lack of visibility: limits potential for reuse Inaccessibility: duplication of effort; prevents others building on research Understanding funders’ policies on OA and data management Loss of data Research group level guidelines
PREVIOUS SITUATION No central guidance on research data management No central data store or registry for data No institutional requirement for OA publishing Thesis deposit mandatory for PGRs
SOLUTIONS Technical Development Training Policy Development
POLICY TASK AND FINISH GROUP Broad group including: Directors of Research Library staff RKT staff Legal Services Staff Ethics Officer University Records Manager Assistant College Manager for Research Representative from the Academic Staff Association
TIMELINE Policy development 2 month consultation period Incorporation of feedback Approval Implementation
THEMES AND ISSUES Linking OA to publications with research data management and OA to data Level of detail Defining responsibilities Balancing use of institutional repository with discipline-specific repository
PGR THEMES AND ISSUES Separate policy covering PGR data and publications Mandates deposit if required by funder; encourages in other cases Annual data health check with supervisor Clarifies supervisor and student responsibilities Funding OA publishing
FUTURE ISSUES Live procedural/guidance document See Open Access FAQs Service costs and sustainability Procedures for institutional OA block grant
