GOALS OF GUIDANCE Guidance consists of direct and indirect actions used by an adult to help children develop appropriate behavior patterns. Another is Prosocial behaviors which is the acts or kindness that benefit others such as feelings, verbally and physically comforting others, showing concern.
GUIDANCE AND YOU v Many studies have been conducted to determine the effect that specific personality traits have on children’s behavior v The studies show that effective early childhood teachers encourage and show interest in children v According to research teachers should interact often with their children and ask open-ended questions the questions require more than one word answers
PREPARING FOR GUIDANCE v First step toward effective guidance is observation of the children. Watch and note how individual children behave in certain situations v Ask yourself how you respond to each of the children in your class. v Another important guideline is to plan with other teachers, sharing observations, feelings and suggestions will help you fully understand the children v Next do not talk to other adults when you are teaching unless it is important the children should always come first v Finally sit with the children whenever possible you will be closer to the children’s level
DIRECT GUIDANCE v Invloves nonverbal physical and verbal actions. Nonverbal actions include facial gestures such as eye contact a smile or even a surprised look. v Examples: Use simple language, speak in a relaxed voice, be positive, offer choices with care, encourage independence and cooperation, be fiirm
INDIRECT GUIDANCE v Involves outside factors that influence behaviors. The layout of the center is a form of indirect guidance v It can indirectly influence both the children and teacher’s behavior v In order to carefully supervise young children and open classroom is best v Stand with your back against the wall you should be able to view the entire classroom. A healthy safe environment can be promoted through the physical setup of the facility.
TECHNIQUES FOR EFFECTIVE GUIDANCE v As an early childhood teacher, you will teach children acceptable behaviors. Likewise the children in your classroom will also teach other. Whatever effect you have on the children’s behavior the children will affect others v There are specific guidance techniques that can be helpful such as warning, time out, praising, affirming, suggesting
PROMOTING A POSITIVE SELF CONCEPT v When guiding children’s behavior your actions should always promote a positive self concept in each child. A child self concept includes the qualities the child believes he o she possesses. It is a result of beliefs, feelings, and perceptions a child has himself or her self
