Why continue with your German? After Russian, German is the most widely-spoken language in Europe. In Europe it is spoken not only in Germany, Austria and Switzerland but also in Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Italy and Romania. It is also spoken in Namibia and in parts of Argentina. German comes from the same language group as English, Dutch and Afrikaans.

Career Opportunities

Finance • Germany, Austria and Switzerland are the strongest economies in Europe. • Frankfurt and Zurich are both important global financial hubs.

Translating & Interpreting • German is an official language of the EU institutions. • Many translators find work with the European Central Bank in Frankfurt. • German is treated as a semi -official language in the UN institutions in Vienna. • German is also the most widely-used lingua franca in central and eastern Europe and in Russia.

Diplomatic Corps Many students who study German combine it with law or politics in university. There are many openings for graduates in the Irish embassies in Berlin, Bern and Vienna. During the Cold War Vienna was nicknamed ‘the spy capital of the world’?

Publishing Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, Gunter Grass, Thomas Mann, Heinrich Böll, Patrick Süskind…the list goes on. Not only has Germany made a huge contribution to the world literary canon, but it is also one of the biggest publishing hubs in the world.

Did you know? During the reign of Peter the Great many Germans and Swiss emigrated to Russia. There is even a district in Moscow called the German Village! Many German words have entered the Russian language, and the structure of the two languages are quite similar. Many Russians have German surnames.
