An Important Distinction - RESPECT & HONOR
“Respect” (Phobos) from which we get the word phobia or fear. ■ “Respect is outward focusing on a person’s position or on the power of an office. When only respect is emphasized in family life, it leads to outer conformity, fake intimacy, and eventually distant relationships. ”
“Honor” (doxazw) to cause the dignity or worth of a person or thing to become recognized, valued and honored. ■ It’s one thing to respect (fear) God because of His tremendous power and greatness… and another thing to honor (value) Him because of those qualities.
Respect acknowledges a person’s position; Honor attaches worth to that person as an individual. ■ ■ Respect teaches manners and proper behavior in the presence of others; honor teaches an appreciation of that person. Respect can make a family look good on the outside; honor builds the internal bonds that provide strength and lasting unity.
Why Honor Dad? ■ ■ ■ It is right (Eph. 6: 1) It pleases God (Col. 3: 20) It teaches respect for authority (Rom. 13: 1 -2) ■ It places you under God’s protection (Prov. 6: 20 -23) ■ It brings peace & joy to your parents (Prov. 15: 20)
How Do We Honor? “to cause the dignity or worth of a person or thing to become recognized, valued and honored. ” ■ ■ ■ Think of them before yourself (Rom. 12: 10) Seek their advice (Prov. 1: 8) Place great value on your relationship with them.
