Purpose of values project • Promoting understanding of the trust the community places in those of us in public education • Connect the whole Department through common values – schools and corporate staff • Make the values relevant to everyone by using day-to-day examples • To give you useful tools to help have conversations with staff about behaviour at work • To link values to how problems of practice are addressed and FISO targets achieved
What are DET’s Values
Why are values important Values help set expected behaviours and how we should treat each other Values-driven behaviour strengthens our performance, standards and outcomes: Values provide guiding principles Values-driven behaviours increase trust and confidence in our work
Why DET’s Values matter • DET’s Values and how we live them, go to the heart of the integrity of our Public Education system which has an immeasurable impact on thousands of lives each year • The work we do is really important – and the way we do it also matters • Having shared values helps us to set expectations of how we should all behave and treat each other to become an organisation that values high performance, strong accountability and continual learning – for ourselves as much as our students • Values-driven behaviours increase trust and confidence in the work that we do • DET’s Values provide us with guiding principles for the decisions we make every day
How DET’s Values fit DET Values should be read in conjunction with any professional standards/codes of conduct and school values. They work in partnership and are complementary. Some schools have used a discussion around how the DET Values fit with their own community values as a starting point for a conversation about values and ethics.
How DET’s Values connect to FISO DET’s Values align to the “Vision and Values” culture in the Professional leadership (area). They describe the behaviours (the “how”) FISO targets are achieved. They overlap with, and work in partnership with school values and professional standards and codes.
Embedding DET’s Values Data highlighting issue (behaviour) to be addressed Values provide framework to resolve issue Specific actions implemented FISO outcomes enhanced through improved behaviour
Example: Respect School surveys indicate problem with lack of respect DET’s Value of Respect defines expected behaviour Specific actions are taken to reinforce a culture of respect and deal with disrespectful behaviour Collaboration and consistency between all staff encourages and reinforces respectful behaviour, and strengthens team outcomes
