Destructive Testing z The mechanical testing of weld samples to determine their strength and other characteristics. z Performed on test specimens taken from welded plate that duplicates the material and the weld procedures used on the job. z Widely used for welder and procedure qualification z test procedures developed by the American Welding Society that are the standard for industry.
Advantages z Destructive testing is used to test the soundness of a given weld and the skill of the person who created the weld z cost effective z less and cheaper equipment requirements z reliable results
Types of Destructive Testing z Tensile Strength test z involves intentionally reducing the cross section of a weld coupon and applying a pulling load until the weld/coupon fails.
z Side Bend z involves bending a weld coupon at a right angle in relation to the direction in which the weld was performed.
z Guided Root Bend z bending a weld coupon over a radius of a specific size, or guide, for the purpose of testing the soundness of the bottom or first weld pass
z Guided Face Bend z bending a weld coupon over a radius of a specific size, or guide, for the purpose of testing the soundness of the top or last weld pass or passes.
Welding Code z Welding codes exist for: z standardized welding functions within a given industry. z providing a set of rules or regulations for a given area (example: structural steel) of welding. z providing a point of reference for all entities working in a given industry.
AWS Coding Requirements z Maximum allowed width for SMAW welds (except weave beads). . . z 3 times the electrode diameter z Maximum height of reinforcement or bead height for SMAW welds. . . z 1/8 of an inch z Number of layers (not passes) to correctly fill an AWS groove weld on 3/8 inch plate with a backing bar. . . z three z Maximum allowed width for the root opening used for the AWS groove weld with backing bar. . . z 1/4 of an inch
z Correct included angle for the AWS groove weld with backing bar… z 45 degrees z Fillet welds that have equal leg length, regardless if the contour of the weld face is concave or convex… z will have a face angle of 45 degrees
Organizations z American Welding Society z created the welding code for structural steel, bridges and aircraft. z AWS D 1. 1 Code z Structural Welding Code z AWS D 1. 5 Code z Bridges z AWS D 17. 1 Code z fusion welding for aerospace applications z AWS D 18. 1 Code z welding austenitic stainless-steel tube and pipe systems in sanitary (hygienic) supplications
z American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) z Code for boilers and pressure vessels, Section IX z the welding of piping connecting to boilers and pressure vessels
z American Petroleum Institute (API) z the standard for welding pipelines and related facilities (API Standard 1104) z the welding of pipelines using compression, pumping, and transmission of crude petroleum, petroleum products, fuel and gases, and certain distribution systems
z American Waterworks Association z issued standards covering the fabrication of piping for water purification plants
Your Destructive test z Use 7108 electrodes from oven z DO NOT manipulate 7018 electrodes! z Evaluated by AWS Welding Code D 1. 1 z Practice before final destructive test… z You must pass this weld along with maintaining at least an 85% average for the entire course!
