What is designsafe? Software tool for analysis of potential hazards l Looks for solutions in design phase l Is currently not specific for biomedical engineering use l

What are similar products? Many consultants perform similar tasks l WHAM software is only known alternative l – cheaper – not as user-friendly – not as complete

Customizing designsafe for BME l Items to consider: – potential users – potential tasks – potential hazards l Test new product – artificial knee – bowel segment resectioning – laser use in research

Analysis of Knee Replacement Loss of limb function l Stress on knee l Slips, loss of balance l Blood-borne diseases l

Analysis of Resection of a Segment of Bowel Bacterial/Viral l Reactions to chemicals l Cutting/Severing l Loss of Function l

Analysis of Laser Use in Research Deviation from safe work practices l Burns l Optical Properties l Unexpected start-up l

Conclusions designsafe was customized for BME l Potential BME hazards were assessed l designsafe is indeed a powerful tool to aid in the design of BME devices l
