Bruising and injuries in non- mobile babies and children • Torn frenulum due to 3 month old baby cutting herself on her clover leaf shaped dummy • Bleeding gums due to 6 week old baby knocking his head on parent’s shoulder • Small cut under nose caused by 6 week old baby’s nails • Thumb size bruise on buttock of 2 month old baby, no explanation
The role of cognitive bias • Anchoring bias • locking into diagnosis too early • Availability bias • relating it to a recent similar presentation • Confirmation bias • looking for evidence to support pre-conceived opinion • Diagnosis momentum • accepting a previous diagnosis without sufficient scepticism • Overconfidence bias • over reliance on one’s own ability, intuition and judgement • Premature closure • ‘jumping to a conclusion’ • search satisfying bias • the ‘eureka’ moment
