Today, we will learn how to make. . . no, not gunpowder. . . … a compass.
You will need: • A magnet • A bowl of water • A piece of card • A needle • A pair of scissors Follow this video tutorial: https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=4_t. QQFHp. Sa 4&safe=true Or the instructions in the following slides.
Make Rub the magnet over the needle about 20 times.
Make Cut a circle out of the card. (about 5 cm in diameter)
Make Write an 'N' and an 'S' on the card to show north and south. You can add more detail if you want to.
Make Fold the card in half.
Make Place the needle on the card, with the point of the needle on the 'N'.
Make Gently place the card on the surface of the water. It should move to point north. You can check this out with a compass if you have one.
