Having a well structured presentation can both ease your nerves and captivate your audience. Here are some general tips to presenting your work in just 5 minutes in an effective manner: 1. Have your material prepared in advance of your presentation 2. Rehearse your presentation at home or to someone else. Be mindful of timing. 3. Keep it relevant and keep it simple 4. Know the what, how and why of what you are doing – Know your design and empathise 5. Keep hydrated before your presentation. 6. If you are nervous, hum your favourite song in your head or visualise something that has a calming effect like a blue sky or flower etc. 7. At the beginning of your presentation, have your resources ready for example a Power. Point, a poster, a storyboard, a physical prototype etc. 8. Communicate clearly, professionally and with confidence. Maintain eye contact. Use your hands to animate performance. 9. Begin your presentation with a story that is going to captivate your audience. 10. Ask a thought provoking rhetorical question, for example: Why is design so important for our environment? 11. Give some statistics by making a claim, giving evidence, warrant your claim and make a rebuttal. 12. Use your presentation resources to explain your design concept 13. Introduce ‘pauses’ at the beginning, the climax and the conclusion. 14. Open the floor feedback at the end. Just listen! 15. Use feedback to improve where possible.
