Project Explanation This is a research and design unit. In any sort of design process, the final outcome is based on research and synthesis of that research. It is never a pure work of imagination in that there needs to be a justification and a functional purpose for the design(s). You will be creating set(s) and scenic elements (furniture/set decoration) for a play that will not be staged. This will be a work of theory and application of research up through the design idea. For your final product for this project, you will present a model that exemplifies your research findings as it will serve the play.

Project Expectations • You are designing a fully usable set for a one act

Project Expectations • You are designing a fully usable set for a one act play of your choosing. If the play has more than one set you must identify ways to incorporate/stage all scenes. (Note: This can sometimes be achieved through the use of just furniture pieces or other scenic elements. or areas of the stage. ) • You will need to read and explore the play more than once for the research purposes. • You are to develop visual research for your designs. Visual research refers to items of specificity like a particular window shape or design, a lamp, a wall decoration, a piece of furniture, and so on. • You are to formulate written justifications of your designs that is based on research, not opinion, that outline your intentions. • Your final model is also to use color and reflect the research. • Your final project will be done in a google doc format. • You will present your research, designs, and justifications to your peers.

Power point expectations • You are to outline the play’s plot, a list of

Power point expectations • You are to outline the play’s plot, a list of all set pieces mentioned in the script of the play, plus additional pieces you are adding to the model based on artistic interpretation of the piece. (A set piece is furniture, appliances, lamps, paintings, rugs, or any other element that aids in establishing the play’s era, mood, socioeconomic status, or aesthetic. ) • You are to identify, research, and explain the functionality of the room(s) depicted. You are to explore, establish and justify they type stage you would use to stage the play (arena, thrust, or proscenium stage. ) • The intended impact on the audience of the set design is to be exemplified. What does your set communicate to the audience about the play? • You will need to provide research that demonstrates the time period of the play.

Power point continued • You may choose to stage the play in a setting

Power point continued • You may choose to stage the play in a setting or time period other than suggested by the play script. You will need to present justification for this choice if you decide to do so. • You are to provide a minimum of 10 pieces of visual research from at least 7 resources for the set and/or set pieces that demonstrate the play’s time period, color scheme, needs that are mentioned in the script, and those elements that will give the set the touches to add completeness. • Your justifications (explanations) for your final choices must be based on research and needs of the play as outlined in the script, and not opinion. • All research should be properly cited using Chicago Style of Citation (See my web page for link)

Set Model • Set can be staged in a box, using foam core, a

Set Model • Set can be staged in a box, using foam core, a combination of both, or any other means that will effectively identify and communicate your intentions for the set in model form. • Effective set pieces can be constructed out of Sculpey (or like modeling compound), doll house furniture, or any other approach that you feel would effectively communicate the set pieces in a 3 D form. • The set and its pieces are to demonstrate purpose in the final model. • Your set design is meant to serve and meet the needs of the play. You can take an abstract approach or displace the setting of the play if you justify it and it serves the needs of the play.

The rubric • Criterion A: Knowing and Understanding (Research presented in power point demonstrates depth of knowledge established by the use of more than 7 separate resources that contributed to formulating in both a written research and visual, the findings to create your concept. ) • Criterion B: Developing Skills (Student demonstrates their ability to serve the needs of the play from a set designer point of view by conceptualizing a design based on the script, research, and synthesis of their interpretation. ) • Criterion C: Thinking Creatively (The final model w/ set pieces creates a sense of mood, purpose, and intention that is clearly influenced by the needs of the play and the research. )

Assessment • This is part 1 of your final for the semester. • You will earn one rubric grade for the research/justifications based on research and the google presentation you create. • You will earn one rubric grade for final constructed model. • There will be weekly checkpoint grades assessed for progress based on power point progress and pictures of the progress of your model construction. • On the day of your exam, you will evaluate and critique the work of 2 of your peers based on their model and power point provided by the designer.
