Statement of the Problem ● Recent 100 year flood ● Destroyed a structurally deficient bridge ● located over Spring Creek, located near Puddintown Road in College Township, Centre County PA. ● bridge provided vital access to the Mount Nittany Medical Center for residences, ● hinders first responders as a 10 mile detour is required due to destruction of the bridge
Project Objective ● Pennsylvania Department of Transportation of (Penn. DOT) Engineering District 2 -0 ● requires a new bridge design to replace the one destroyed by the flood
Required Design Criteria Penn. DOT District 2 -0 requires that the bridge must include ● Standard abutments ● No piers ● Deck material made from. 23 meter thick medium strength concrete ● No cable anchorages ● Hold load of two AASHTO H 20 -44 trucks in each lane of traffic ● Deck elevation of 20 m and span of 40 m ● Design for both Warren and Howe truss bridge

The Best Solution ● Through testing of both the Warren and Howe designs, it was determined that the Howe design is the optimal replacement. ● This conclusion was made due to the Howe Bridge’s higher structural and design efficiency. Giving residences a safer, more stable, and structurally efficient bridge.
