Design Project #1 Replacement of Vehicle Bridge over Spring Creek Centre County, PA Introduction to Engineering Design EDGSN 100 Section Squirrel Pants Soup-A-Stars (005) Shirley Banh Utsav Patel Dylan Kolb Nicole Song Insert Your Bridge Photo here Presented to: Prof. Berezniak Spring 2016
Problem: -Bridge across Spring Creek along Puddintown Road in College Township, Centre County, PA has been destroyed due to flood -This bridge was deemed structurally deficient -Is in a heavily travelled local road -Vital roadway to get to Mount Nittany Medical Center located in State College, PA. With this bridge collapse, traffic has to be re-routed -This causes the a disruption in traffic flow
Objective: With the bridge destroyed by the flood, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (Penn. DOT) Engineering District 2 -0 has set up a project to design a new bridge as a replacement for the previously failed one.
Design Criteria: Computer Model: -no piers (one span) -deck material consists of medium strength concrete (0. 23 meters thick) -no cable anchorages. -designed take the load of two AASHTO H 20 -44 trucks (225 k. N) with one in each traffic lane. -deck elevation set at 20 meters and the deck span exactly 40 meters. -both a Warren through truss bridge and a Howe through truss bridge shall be analyzed. -steel member type, cross section type and size are left to the design teams. Prototype: -60 Standard Popsicle Sticks (8 members to connect) -Elmer’s Glue -Hot Glue
Technical Approach Phase 1: Economic Efficiency Economic efficiency (cost) shall be determined using the Engineering Encounters Bridge Design 2015 (EEBD 2015) software based on the requirements, constraints, and performance criteria specified herein
Technical Approach Phase 2: Structural Efficiency A prototype (i. e. , a scale model bridge) bridge shall be designed and built for both a standard Warren through truss bridge and a standard Howe through truss bridge by each design team using popsicle sticks
Results Phase 1: Economic Efficiency
Results Phase 2: Structural Efficiency
Best Solution: Based on the Economic efficiency, structural efficiency, design efficiency and the constructability, a warren truss is the best solution as the replacement of the collapsed bridge
Conclusions
Recommendations: It is recommended not to use plates to connect two bars of a bridge, based on the unsatisfactory results we had while doing it in our own prototype warren bridge. A high concentration of metal on the center is advised to make the best possible bridge based on our observations of prototype bridges load testing of our peers. It is advised to the Core of Engineers to make the bridge as symmetrical as possible because even a slight asymmetry may result in a deadly disaster as observed by our design team.
