Design of Fuel Oil System for Small Power Plant
Main Equipments • Main storage tanks for fuel oil and diesel oil • Settling tanks for fuel oil and diesel oil • Day tanks that will store the fuel oil and diesel oil required to run the engines for a specified number of hour • Fuel oil purification system • Transfer pump • Fuel Oil heater
Diesel and Heavy Oil • Heavy oil requires preheating to 60 o. C to reducing viscosity prior pumping. • Diesel fuel requires for start up (about 30 minute after start up) • The dual pump and dual pipe line shows in the next slide. • Engine efficiency is 32%. • Heating value of diesel oil is 44. 8 MJ/kg • Heating value of heavy oil is 41. 2 MJ/kg
Fuel Oil Storage • The capacity depends on fuel supply period. • The design criteria – Fuel deliveries every 14 days. – There are enough fuel even one supply is missed. • Design the dimension of fuel tank for diesel and heavy oil. • The fuel oil density is 920 kg/m 3 • The diesel oil density is 860 kg/m 3
Fuel oil heater • The Cp of fuel oil is 2 k. J/kg. K. • The redundant heater is required for the maintenance. • Sizing the size (k. W) of fuel oil heater.
Fuel Transfer Pump • Because of high viscosity of the fuel and the significant of solid impurities, screw pumps are preferred. • The dual pump and dual pipe lines system is provided for interruption-free operation. • Design information – Hydrostatic head 3 m – Design velocity about 0. 5 m/s – Transfer pump works for 2 hours a day. – The pipe length (including the equivalent of fitting) is 150 m.
Fuel Transfer Pump • Design the pipe diameter. • Design the pump k. W. – The viscosity of fuel oil is 0. 828 Ns/m 2 – The viscosity of diesel oil is 0. 014 Ns/m 2
Fuel Oil Settling Tank • They are used to allow a part of the suspended particles to settle by leaving the fuel oil in the tank for a specified period, say 1 day. • A significant part of the solid particulates and water settle at the bottom, which is periodically drained. • Design the dimension of fuel oil settling tank.
Fuel Oil Day Tank • The day tank hold enough fuel oil to run the engine for about 8 -12 hours. • Design the dimension of fuel oil settling tank.
Fuel Oil Separator • The separator are usually of the centrifugal type, which are capable of separating very small particulates and water. • The operation of separator system period is 68 hours a day. • The standby unit is required for reliability. • Design the capacity of fuel oil separator (m 3/h).
