Design Graphics Mech 289 By Nabil Shalabi Jan 28 th 2008

Module 3 part 1 Solid works and its applications Module objectives: • Learn how to use solid works effectively • Apply the knowledge to real life problems • Learn company standards for machine drawings • Design for manufacturing (integrating this course with Machine tool lab)

Lecture outline • Why use CAD design (examples of software) • Examples of CAD models • Introduction to solid works • Class Exercise • Class project • Assignment CAD 1

Computer Aided Design CAD • creating 3 dimensional designs of solids and surfaces • these designs can be used for • Simply a 3 D look of a design (for fun) • Creating manufacturing drawings for technicians to build the designs • Used in other applications to create simulations of dynamic systems • Used in finite element analysis of structures Examples Solid. Works, Pro. Engineer, Auto. CAD, Catia

4: 1 bevel gear reducer Examples

Shaft bearing Mount

Space Elevator

3 dimensional Maze

Solid Works Three major categories • Part – Sketch (2 Dimensions) – Extrude (3 Dimensions) • Assembly • Drawings

Class Exercise

Butterfly valve
