What is Engineering Design ? What is the difference between Engineering design, fashion design, or webpage design? Methodical application of scientific knowledge and technology, but probably have limited exposure to creative and innovative design.

What is Engineering Design ? The process of devising a system, component, or process

What is Engineering Design ? The process of devising a system, component, or process to meet the desired needs. (ABET) Desicision making process ( Often iterative) Application of knowledge in basic science, mathematics, and engineering science is required. Among the fundamental elements of the design process are the establishment objectives and criteria, synthesis, analysis, construction, testing, and evaluation.

The goal of the design process It is not to find just any solution,

The goal of the design process It is not to find just any solution, but the best one given the constraints and available resources. It requires the application of; § Sound judgement § Decision making skills § Patience in constantly evaluation progress toward a solution

The design processes Elements: § A problem to solve § Constraints § A number

The design processes Elements: § A problem to solve § Constraints § A number of solutions

The design processes They embody; § The steps required to take an idea from concept to realization. § Problem-solving methodologies that aim to develop a system. § Should meet the customer’s needs within given constraints. § Not so much different than many daily tasks.

The types of design processes Prescriptive Descriptive

Prescriptive design process § Defines an exact process or systematic recipe for realizing a system. § They are often algorithmic in nature. § Expressed on flow charts with decision logic.

Descriptive design process § Less formal than the prescriptive design processes. § Describes typical

Descriptive design process § Less formal than the prescriptive design processes. § Describes typical activities involved in realizing designs. § With less emphasis on exact sequencing. § Some processes may be considered more strongly associated with one than the other.

Descriptive design process

Descriptive design process § If there are important changes in the requirements or customer needs, you can move in between phases. § Redesign of one or more phases costs substantial time and money.

Elements of the design process Problem Identification § Identify the problem and customer needs

Elements of the design process Problem Identification § Identify the problem and customer needs § Occurs in a variety of ways : § You can come up with a new idea § Some client can ask for a solution for a problem, etc. § In either case it is critical to determine true needs § Failure in this phase may result: § Costly redesigns § Abandonment of the project

Elements of the design process Research Phase § Design team conducts research on the:

Elements of the design process Research Phase § Design team conducts research on the: § § Basic engineering, Scientific principles, Related technologies, Existing solutions. § The objective is to become an expert on the problem. § To prevent loss of time and money by not reinventing the wheel. § To be positioned to develop new and innovative solutions.

Elements of the design process Requirement Specification § Determine what the system must do

Elements of the design process Requirement Specification § Determine what the system must do to be successful and to be accepted by the customer. § Important to focus what the system must do without how the solution will be implemented. § Might be challenging for engineers since the way they are educated. § The requirements are the mission statement that guides the entire project. § They provide flexibility and innovation during developing the solution if properly developed.

Elements of the design process Concept Generation § Open ended procedure § Many possible

Elements of the design process Concept Generation § Open ended procedure § Many possible solutions are developed § The objective is to find the best solution § ‘Best solution’ means: § § To meet the requirements § To satisfy the constraints of the customer. Wild creativity is encouraged but should be controlled with evaluation and comparison with alternatives.

Elements of the design process Design Phase § A technical solution is developed iteratively.

Elements of the design process Design Phase § A technical solution is developed iteratively. § System is designed in fine detail. § All major systems and subsystems are identified. § The description of whole system is done with an appropriate model with respect to the employed technology.

Elements of the design process Prototyping And Construction Phase § Different elements are constructed.

Elements of the design process Prototyping And Construction Phase § Different elements are constructed. § Objective is model some aspects of the system, and demonstrating functionality to be employed in the end. § Many prototypes can be produced; § Some are discarded, some are modified as the system evolves.

Elements of the design process Prototyping And Construction Phase § Purpose of prototypes can

Elements of the design process Prototyping And Construction Phase § Purpose of prototypes can be; § Experimenting, demonstrating proof of concept, improving design issues.

Elements of the design process Prototyping And Construction Phase § They can be utilized

Elements of the design process Prototyping And Construction Phase § They can be utilized in; § § § Reviewing concept generation phase with the client, Design phase to test a design idea, Seeking for funding from investors or private equities.

Elements of the design process System Integration § Objective is to produce a working

Elements of the design process System Integration § Objective is to produce a working system. § Therefore, all of the subsystems are brought together. § Many different pieces of design must be interfaced.

Elements of the design process System Integration § The team must work closely. §

Elements of the design process System Integration § The team must work closely. § Challenging and time-consuming. § Effort during design phase for efficient interfacing eases the work.

Elements of the design process Test Phase § Closely tied to the system integration

Elements of the design process Test Phase § Closely tied to the system integration phase § Overall system is tested to demonstrate that it meets requirements.

Elements of the design process Delivery and Acceptance § System is delivered to the

Elements of the design process Delivery and Acceptance § System is delivered to the customer § Development does not end neceesarily end in this face § The system is tested by a mutually agreed upon process.

Elements of the design process Maintenance Phase § Starts after the system is delivered

Elements of the design process Maintenance Phase § Starts after the system is delivered to the customer, eventually § Development can still continue in this face as well. § During this phase § § § System is maintained, Design problems can be corrected, New functionalities can be developed.
