Design a shopping centre

What you would find above in towns. What are the features of the out of town shopping centres below?

Challenge: • You represent a town planning team in charge of designing the layout of a new shopping centre • The nearest city has a population of 100, 000 people but you are within an hour’s drive of a further 200, 000 people • You need to plan the shopping centre in or out of town, taking into account transport links, space and cost of parking, eating outlets, access for deliveries, impact on nearby roads or homes • Every decision you make as a small group must be justified.

1. Transport • It is essential that both public and private transport is catered for • THINK – what type of transportation will enable your shopping centre to function? • Are you going to plan for everyone owning a car or consider the alternatives? (be sustainable!) • Disabled access

2. Retail • Shops – obviously! • What types of shops? Specialist? For bulk buying? Low order? High order? • Where are you going to locate them? • How does this link to the transport system? • Can drivers park nearby?

3. Business • Your shopping centre will be a place of work for many people. • THINK – what types of jobs will be available? Are transport links sufficient? Parking? Eating places? • Are businesses going to be located according to a plan? Any sustainable initiatives?

4. Housing: Will it be a factor for your shopping centre or not? : (e. g. in town or out of town) State any impact such as traffic, jams, blocked driveways.

5. Public Services You also might want to consider the provision of: Emergency services and access on your chosen location For all 5 – consider the concept of sustainability. Use your previous knowledge
